Alienware taunts my R2 with these new cards......bloody technology always moving forward lol I have just upgraded my R2 with 8gb of g-skill ram and have a 940xm cpu on its way in the mail.
My question is will the r2 be able to support (and fit) a set of hd 6990m cards in crossfire? I will continue to upgrade this thing until it becomes obsolete however I'm hoping that's a while away![]()
What about power consumption? will I need a bigger pack than the one that came with my hd 5870's.....also cooling is a main concern I have....running 2 6990m's and a 940xm would create a lot of heat right? Will my original fan set up do the job with a supporting cooler?
I know this question is already answered out there somewhere, but for a laptop upgrading noob like me some of your answers are very confusing.
God I dont know how you guys work some of this stuff out lol good job anyway.

It will support it. But its not recommended to heavily overclock at all. If your worried about power consumption, you could always undervolt the 6990's a bit.

Good luck, and happy overclocking. -
Cheers man, just after posting this I went back to the first page of the main thread about this and found some useful stuff.

Yea, 6990s work in the R2. (sig)
Heres the thread to read:

Sweet job man, do you have any heating issues running those cards with the 940xm ? also can you point me in the right direction for purchasing these cards?

Step B: Email the guys over at Mythlogic and ask for a quote on two 6990s.
Alternate Step B: Buy a couple of 6970s from the eBay seller. The difference in actual, real world, performance between the two is negligible. The price difference isn't. -
HA ! I need my liver for alcoholic beverages ! I'll take your word for it....can you give me a ballpark figure? how about a price on the 6970s?

True that. It think the 6990 only has a core clock 35mhz faster than the 6970 (680 vs 715mhz).
The only real difference therefore is the extra unlocked shaders however at 1120 that is only 160 shaders more than the 6970 which isn t massively different.
OC the 6970 to 750mhz lol and perhaps the 2 cards will be similar performing -
As far as where to get them, I go them from NBR member Phektan, but he no longer sells the cards. Also look for Clevo cards. Dell cards will require you to manually engage the fans or will keep the fans at 100% all the time.
As far as heat issues, I don't have any, but you'll benefit from running the cards with an undervolt due to power throttling since the cards draw more power than the 5870's. So stock clocks and an undervolt are definately the way to go. -
Good advice guys, cheers for the info about your system DR
Also that is defiantly something to think about with the 6970's, thanks King
Price will probably direct me with this upgrade for now, we will see what sort of price gap I can come up with between these two cards. -

There are no heat issues if the heatsink is properly installed, with good paste, and the proper thickness of thermal pads.
DO NOT GET DELL CARDS
I cannot emphasize that enough. DON'T DO IT.
One 6970 is more than you'll need for most games. Order one, then when the funds become available, order the other with a CF cable. I have a Eurocom 6970 for sale on eBay. PM me if you're interested. -
Ahhhh. I have 2x 6990's and an i7 940xm just waiting to be installed. I need to hurry up and get an r2

Did you have an R2 when you bought that stuff? A base model R2 is probably dirt cheap right now. I haven't looked in a while.
