When i connect my alienware m17x to my tv with a hdmi cable i get a message saying hdmi to dvi connection detected and that i need to connect another cable to hear the audio. However it is a hdmi to hdmi connection and ive tried with 2 cables but i get the same message. I have the IDT audio drivers from the dell website which didnt help. So i also put the ati hd audio drivers from realtek however again no change i still get the message. What am i doin wrong?

I'm not trying to be a smartass or rude when I ask, but are you connecting to the R3s HDMI in or HDMI out?

It might be your TV, have your tried connecting it to a different TV or something else, I know my TV had some initial problems when I connected my HDMI in but I figured it out and not it works flawlessly. if your TV is an older model it might not be set up correctly to work with the HDMI calbe you have or the Version of the HDMI plug.

i have used my old m17 r1 (yes withought the 'x') alienware with the hdmi port on the same tv and it worked fine. does anyone know the version of the hdmi plug on an m17x r1? then ill be able to check if itll work with the tv, although i dont think this should be the problem... as the computer doesnt recognise a hdmi-hdmi connections, it says that a hdmi-dvi connection is detected. and yes im 100% sure im using a hdmi cable.
