i just called the guy and asked him more about the laptop spec:

    RAM : 4GIG
    Harddrive: 250 GIG

he said that he was planning to sell it for 750$ but his wife want absolutely get rid of the laptop so hes pushed to sell it for 500$ (my offer).

Also he said that there is no garrantee for the laptop and he doesnt have the receipt since the laptop was given by his brother.

I just want to make sure before doing anything wrong, because 500$ is not much but its all I have (im still a student). So, it is a hot deal or just a BS ?

    Thanks !!!

    generally it aint much money...
But if youre planning on upgrading it

Like Cpu upgrade + Gpu upgrade + Ram upgrade + Screen update it going to cost to much money for whats it worth

but if you like the way its specced just go with it but dont expect to much gaming experience with it.

Like everyone said, this is the best-est deal I ever seen, even it is used but it is just 1.5 year old, and $500 is kinda underpriced, and like everyone said you can upgrade it later, for me I'd deal with him. If it was a M14x then I'd reconsider it because there's not much stuff to upgrade though.

Yes, more than enough to run it I guess.

    There's a problem here. The M17x R2 has a 16:10 aspect ratio, therefor it should've been either a 1440x900 or a 1920x1200 maximum screen resolution.

    The picture is indeed that of a M17x or a M17x R2.

How much do you trust this person?

The strength of the m17x R2 is the Aluminum chassis and the fact that it has 2 mxm vid card slots. So its a tweakers paradise

As its currently configured, you'll run BF3, but with a mobile 4870, you're looking at low to medium settings and perhaps reduced resolution

Yo, look at what Katalin said. If the guy's giving you the wrong resoutions. How can a person trying to sell a laptop not know its resolutions?

Please first call up the guy, and ask him the resolution. IF he sticks to his old answer. Then either its not a M17x R2 or he's attempting a scam on you.

Be careful man, though it might seem as a double bang for your buck type deal, losing 500 would still sting.

You could buy a decent SSD for that. :p

i mean a m17x r2 motherboard. also, since it's no longer made, the motherboard was tagged as "refurbished".

the same motherboard that's in the laptop he's thinking of buying. IMHO $500 for a complete working m17x r2 is worth it, it has huge upgrade potential and is a beast of a machine fully upgraded.

you can almost max it (without AA I guess), except for the 900p screen, it is a crazy deal, if you want to upgrade it, just go ahead buy it and put 6990m xfire on, will be crazy

ram and hdd can be bought from almost any pc store.
its the other stuff (like keyboard, palm rest, screen) which are harder to get.

    the ram you want is DDR3 - PC3-10700 (1333mhz)
at least for the r2, i'm sure the r3 supports faster/newer so not sure about that one.

what laptop do you have? You can get laptop memory online at newegg, tigerdirect, ncix etc...Or any local computer store will be able to order laptop memory...just make sure its SODIMM

For example, i got my laptop memory from ncix.ca...ordered it online when it was on sale and picked it up in a real ncix store

The laptop has only two RAM slots, so for now you are limited to maximum two sticks of 4Gb each @1333Mhz.

But if you're not doing anything that requires that much, 8Gb is still plenty for most average users.

I paid around $39 + tax for 2x4gig Gskill ddr3 1333 Sodimms at ncix.ca ... this was a great deal 6 months ago, but today, you can find it for even cheaper.

Just wait for a sale, laptop ram is relatively cheap

do you mean that if i want the ram upgrade, i have to remove the old ram before placing the new ram ? too bad if so, i was planing to buy 2x 2gig ram and just add em to the existent ram

That is correct, you'll have to remove the old ram and install new ram...however, 8gigs costs $40 now (Canadian) so don't lose too much sleep over it ;)
