    Hi all
Im looking to upgrade the beast and after looking about and seeing the i7 920's or 940's are selling for £600-£800 is the cheaper 720 worth a look .
    I have the i5 540 at the moment .
I dont know if i can afford that kind of money .
Or does anyone know a cheaper place for the 920's

    Thanks

On ebay you can get the 920 for around 400ish US dollars, or less, which would be around 250 pounds sterling.

I'd keep the 540M and take taht over the 720M, I've clocked that thing (540M) to 4GHz stable. Plus, oddly enough, throttle stop works on the 540M, so you can adjust the TDP, and get much more turbo boost. It won't downclock under load as much. You won't be able to adjust the multiplier, but you can adjust the TDP. The 540M is the most fun CPU I have had the chance to Overclock in the M17x R2 (except for the XMs). You can use SetFSB on it to get it(540M) to 4GHz, (where mine was stable). and then adjust the TDP with ThrottleStop. It's a great CPU.

This is all based on the fact that for some reason my 540M (OEM) had an unlocked TDP, which helped hugely with OCing and benchmarking. :D
