So I ran 3dmark vantage (advanced version) today, on two alienwares. One had an i5 520, one had a core 2 duo t9600.

the core 2 duo CRUSHED the i5 in the score department. I'm talking over twice it's cpu score.

Any reason why it this would happen? I was under the assumption that i5s, even at lower ghz, were superior to core 2 duos (particularly when they go into turbo mode)?

I was really surprised by the results.

synthetic benchmarks can be VERY misleading, try a few other ones other than vantage.

in real life applications ( for me video processing and Data recovery ) a good i5 is roughly 2.8 times faster in applications especially those that are memory intensive

Yeah it surprised me that the core 2 duo with a lower clock (as compared to turbo mode on the i5, which I hear they're inclined to be in almost all the time) creamed the i5 so soundly.

Well i had a T9800 oc to 3.5 on a M17x R1 & did a fair few benchmarks with it & now have a i7 620M on a M17x R2 and the 620M thrashes it in every bench. So your results are surprising to say the least.

Yeah I'm gonna throw some processor intensive stuff at it today and see how it does.

Does the Core 2 Duo system have an Nvidia gpu? If it does that's likely messing up the results by letting the gpu help with the cpu test (PhysX). Somebody else will know how to fix that.

On the core 2 duo go into nvidia control panel-->sli/physx options and disable physx, then re run vantage and share your scores

yeh thats true. I was just alerted to this same thing earlier. I was told to go into Vantage options and disable PPU on the notebook with a Nvidia GPU. This really brought back the CPU score to a woeful number LOL.

I was scoring 26k and above and then after disabling PPU i only managed a measly 8k LOL.

Come over here and check out the benchies; you can also put up some of your scores and pics if you like.

Here is a run with overclocked GPU/s and CPUs. i5 520M OCed scored 9415 in Vantage.

Gee imagine if ATI could do PhysX or the equivalent of PPU setting in Vantage as well. The scores would be Super eheheh.
