So i installed my i7 processor last night and all went well untill i realised my touchpad now wont work .
It did flicker the light on if i moved the cable at the touchpad end but now it seems totally dead .
So problem is now do i call Dell and see if i'll get it fixed with the next day warranty or because ive changed the processor and also graphic cards will they decline or will the techie guy sent out to repair even know about the upgrades done since ive owned the laptop or even care .
Or do i just buy a replacement palmrest myself .
Will i need to put back in the ATI 4870 and the i5 processor it originally came with![]()
Or do i just buy a replacement palmrest myself only to find out its not that thats wrong at all .
Thanks for any advice .

Is the ribbon that is connected to the touchpad fully connected in its slot?
I remember that happened to my media bar and the Alien head ribbon wasn't slotted into its place correctly. I thought I had killed my laptop when it wouldn't boot but luckily found it to be a harmless, novice error. -
Just seems dead -
Hmmm, sorry Proz but if it is dead you may need to source a new palmrest cover with a working touchpad.

I still have a years left of the next day warranty thing .
On the other had could it be the little ribbon thats broken and how on earth would i find out and where to get one . -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I'm not sure if Alienware considering a CPU a CRU, but likely I don't think it matters. If the touchpad/ribbon connector is damaged then Alienware will not cover it..

If i can find a palm rest in the UK that comes with the cable id buy it but everywhere i try say it doesnt come with the cable -
You might have creased the ribbon cable. The tech did that last year when Dell replaced the MB. That was the last time I called Alienware for any tech support. The techs they send out to SoCal just aren't that good. If the trackpad ribbon gets folded over the hair-width wires inside break. I spent $20 on eBay (including shipping) and got two replacements. That's what fixed it. Just make sure when you connect the cable ends that they are straight in and pushed in all the way, and make sure when you slide the trackpad back on the frame that the ribbon rolls gently into its notch so it can't get folded and creased again.

I cant seem to find anywhere . -
Look up the m17x trackpad on eBay. Then ask the seller if they have any of the ribbon cables they're willing to part with. I had to ask 5-6 before I found one who would sell the cable separate.

Did you by chance turn the cable upside down? Try cleaning it with some alcohol or something.

I've managed to sorce some on internet ... got two cables coming .
-
I've managed to convice Dell to send me the part (after some phone diagnostics) and do the repair myself in the past. I was able to do this because Dell had to shell out new laptops due to the service technicians they have contracts with. -

Did replacing the cable fix the issue?
-
I got new cables on Ebay and also Dell sent me a shiny new palmrest ... the cable must have been broken as the new cable worked with my old touchpad palmrest... all soretd now
-
Told ya. If you don't watch how you put those ribbon cables back with the keyboard/palmrest/upper control cover, y'all will end up folding them against the magnesium cover and that always breaks the cable. Its the reason I won't have worldwide tech svcs come and fix my system anymore because they folded that cable...twice (2 different technicians). But we here at notebookreview forums are smarter and learn from our mistakes!
