I'm thinking of buying an Alienware and I was wondering which of the 2 processor options where recommended. Mostly for gaming.

Is there any tangible benefit to the overclocked i7-4900MQ? Any downsides (e.g., higher power consumption // lower battery life) ?

I've tried searching for gaming benchmarks, but came up empty.

    Edit:
Oh as an aside, what SSD is the one they offer? (I'm talking about the 256GB mSATA SSD Boot + 1TB 5400RPM SATA 6Gb/s- NV option for an Alienware 17 from the Europe website).

Honestly, the CPU does very little for 90% of games. There are people with 780M SLI and a 4700MQ who don't experience any issues gaming. They all consume they same power, except the Extreme Edition CPU's.

Is it worth it? Not really.

Incorrect they do not consume the same power. Once they are overclocked they will consume more power. Also i7 4900MQ on idle will consume the same power as the i7 4700MQ. But on full load since the different clock speeds power will be more on the 4900.

i haven't seen any performance holdbacks from the 4700MQ...very decent CPU.

It's a personal decision I would say. The performance difference between them will not be very noticeable on games.

Hmmm, I'll guess I'll go for the 4700MQ then. Unless, somebody else has a different opinion?

The mSATA in the AW17 is a Liteon. Decent speed drives. If I were you, I'd get the base option and just buy a Samsung 840 EVO 1tb SSD and throw it in there.

Processor wise, the boy are correct, not really going to make too much of a difference, but if it were I personally, and you don't care about cost savings, go with the 4910.
