You should have no problem. It's basically the same as the 2920XM, except it's a refresh.

How much was it from Dell? You can prove to then that it works as many people have them in their R3's here. Or look on eBay. Ask yourself this, do you really need it? It is very expensive if you don't know how to handle it and unleashe its full potential.

widezu, you know, I also want an i7 2960xm (maybe 3960xm next semester hopefully). I basically want it to have better parallel performance in MATLAB, turns out CUDA computing is still not too fast, it is about %20 faster than a single core :( I guess the best way is to go 2960 or wait for 3960. how much performance gain can I have from 2760 to 2960? can you guess something, thanks man!

3960xm is a desktop processor if I'm not mistaken. It's the replacement for the 990x. A hexacore as well.

@vergil, you are mistaken, the 3960X minus the M is a desktop CPU. The 3920X M is an upcoming mobile CPU.

@graz`zt there's no point shelling out hundreds of bucks for an XM CPU if you won't be using it overclocked. I get over 70% increase on all 4 cores however the heat increase is phenomenal - over 90C. So choose wisely.

    Oops. My bad.

Was thinking of the 3960X. :D

Anyway, back on topic, the XM CPUs are only useful if you do overclock and if you really need to do number crunching stuff. Aside from that, I'd probably invest in an SSD.

Emvees, ebay has many...Dell says it isn't compatible because they dont' make an extreme heatsink for the m17x, but looking at sigs, there are those that have the 2960. Many 2920s too.

i remember a thread earlier on here where someone knew a supplier that was selling the OEM 2960xm for about $800 shipped, the cheapest oem 2920xm a few days ago on ebay was for $490. There were many ES versions too

The CPU heatsink for the M17x has 2 heat pipes anyways so it shouldn't matter. To be honest, no one needs to go with the 2960XM, the 2920XM is the same chip. As you can see in my sig, it runs much quicker than any 2960XM at stock.
