I just got my r3 today, within 2 hours i had to un install and re install steam and i just got a BSOD about a "driver power state failure" and it restarted my comp...
should I return?

Did you try calling Dell tech support? If you just got system and still under warranty I would just do that.

-
Call Alienware support, troubleshoot as necessary or send it back under the 21 day return period. -
Please list your specs.
If you have the 460m. you are kind of screwed, because I had bsods almost every day from the 460m for a month.(23 total)
I'd return it for a 6970 or something better bro.
Or if you don't want to return it, look into this post. It'll disable optimus, and allow you to run off the nvidia gpu. 0 bsods so far. Just remember its not supported by dell.

If you want some live help though, contact me via aim. aim sn: chrisfromspain
I'll try to help out the best I can if you have the 460m like I do. Forum tag is kind of annoying sometimes. -

Well, guess he went offline. Can't help out now.

I have the 460m with the 60hz screen. Still having problems myself. If I disable optimus in the bios (insyde bios a04) and run hwinfo64 with manually set speeds based on temps...i have no problems. Without both, i get problems. Pretty crappy on both counts. If I could find a way to change the fan speeds with a bios flash (which i dont think is possible with this card) then I would be happy, but its still a lot to ask for the average person to have to do to get there laptop to not BSOD in games.

THIS -----> is probably the reason Dell/Alienware jumped on the 580m bandwagon quite readily. Too many issues with 460m
-
Funny how I haven't had a single BSOD yet. Maybe I'm just special? But I stated, Nvidia botched up on the Optimus technology as it's not just Alienware that has this issue. It's a known issue with Sager/Clevo and Asus notebooks as well that use the same technology. Doesn't matter if the GPU is a 460M or a 580M, it's the Optimus platform itself that doesn't work correctly. Go figure, it's bleeding edge.

You are an idiot.
The people with the 460m and bsods have the 60Hz screen, not the 120hz w/ 3D. And we have optimus enabled.
The 3D model has optimus disabled by default. Hence you can safely update to the latest nvidia drivers from the site with the inf files, unlike us optimus owners. You REALLY should read a few things before making posts that make yourself sound like a total Dell fanboy.
Dell isn't perfect, look back at the M11x R1 hinge nightmare(I being a victim). They eventually made amends and provided a free display replacement w/ the new hinges, but it still took them some time.
Please notice there is a difference between the 3D 120hz and the 2D 60hz. I came onto this forum expecting some knowledgeable people who have the ability to read and think before posting, not some stupid post about how you are the singularly most awesome 460m owner in the world. I would only expect a comment like that from some 12 yr old gamer who still makes "Your mother" jokes on an online gaming forum. -

So this is how a certain brand of GPU gets a bad rep. I think this is more of a manufacturer's problem than a video card brand problem.
Almost 99.9% of ASUS G73SW with the 192-bit 460M has zero, nada problems with their 460M. I myself has never had a single bsod/gsod since I got my laptop in May. It also OC like a champ at 825-830 Mhz stable with max GPU temp of 76*C after 5 hrs. of gaming (OC'ed).
Our's could play The Witcher 2 at 1080p in Ultra-ish minus uber sampling etc. Normal setting, DX11 in Metro 2033 at 1080p.
I noticed the whole forum is almost pro AMD, that's okay but this is not the way to label GPU's..
I myself have been looking at some M17X / M18X at AW site with a 580M gpu with a 5.1 support sound card of sort.. -
The 460 just has issues on anything optimus related. And I mean anything
The fact it can't play League of Legends on max settings without bsods is just bad. -
I am not a Dell fanboy, but merely an ex-employee that has dealt with my share of technical problems with their products and knows what to avoid. As my post indicated, this problem also affects Asus and Clevo products as well. Perhaps it would do you well to check into that before calling the problem an isolated incident within Dell. -
Cheers,
just recieved my r3.....loads of problems already?
