Has anyone left their alienware for more than 24 hours on? or months?
do you close your lids and things like that?

Because i'm planning to leave this beast on instead of turning on the other computer!

    thanks

My Alien is on 24/7. Has been for the last 9 months or so now. Sometimes without a restart for months in between unless a windows update requires one. Although mine is the R1 still should be fine. Yours should be alright as well. Cheers.

    You should be fine!!!

LOL, i dont think anything would happen to the m17x. I kept it on for about 24hours, nothing happened to it.

Nothing would happen to it unless you have some serious issues with heat. even then nothing would happen other than a rise in temps. I had my xps m1330 on for a month once :p

Hi, would it be advisable to remove the battery if it is allways left on?

I would have to say yes. If its going to be on 24/7 yu have no use of the battery. But it does also work as a temporary UPS too :p Although because i had it out, i dropped it by accident and i have a dent

Ofcourse maybe not dropping it would help to keep it in good condition but it happens.

To say it should be removed to maintain the battery condition (charge wish)

I have had mine on for more than 24 hours and I was encoding a Blu Ray. It took around 8 to 10 hours to complete

Yeah, I've had mine on almost constantly since I received it several months ago...no issues at all. Personally I think constant power on power off causes more wear and tear on components then leaving it on 24X7. Of course I'd be certain to make sure its on a great surge protector (or UPS) but I think that's true anytime it's turned on when not using the battery.

    Just my 2 cents :)

discharge the battery to 40% place it in a nice ziplock bag and put it in the fridge to preserve it for when you need it

Actually, it's healthier for a system to stay ON without shutdowns (those can kill it sooner). I had laptops staying ON for years with no hardware failures.

Mine stays on almost 24/7 for weeks at a time. The lid is almost always closed as I use external displays.

Remember that laptop batteries have a limited lifespan. You can expect to replace it around the two to three year mark. In previous laptops that I have owned, the batteries have always begun to lose the ability to hold a long-term charge at around 2 years with complete failure at 3 years. I don't expect this AW m17x-R2 to be any different.

I have also never noticed a difference in lifespan whether the battery was installed or not. Leaving a battery around unusued (no charge/discharge cycles) seemed to be just as destructive as always keeping it topped-off.

The best thing might be to just do a full discharge and recharge once every one or two months but leave it disconnected the rest of the time.

if you are going to remove the battery I would suggest a soft Terry or microfiber towel under the laptop right below the palm rest are. the battery has rubber feet on it and when you remove that it's going to cause the anodized case to sit on the ground, as well as slightly distupt airflow.

computers from ~10-13 years ago keep a small charge in the components, so cold booting fatigue is really non exisitiant unless we are measuring lifespan in decades
yup, this is proper li-ion storage procedure.

Not a good idea. LCD ages quickly if left on 24/7. Will start to prematurely fade if left on as will all your components age from the heat. If you are planning on buying a new laptop every two years than I wouldn't worry about it. You will also suck up an incredible amount of dust which will shorten the life of the GPU. The brightness will go, than the color. After a couple of years your screen will look very dim and you will wonder why you bought the RGB in the first place as it looks worse than any other LCD on the market. Screen will get a yellow tint and look really ugly, been there many, many times.

You can set it to auto dim and shut off the LCD after a set period of time in the power management options, or you can shut the lid and the LCD will turn off so not a big issue there IMO.

Leaving the computer 24/7 is fine, removing the battery is a big NO !,
As a father of 3 young kids ,i would not dare leaving my laptop on without battery. I have my lappy on little table with wheels.

Don't want losing data if it being unplugged, blackout, plus the plug on my lappy slip out easyly (m17x-r2).

The battery last only 3 years max, once it's used .
    That is just my opinion.
    cheers. :)
