Ok so I just happened to get, what was advertised as a fully tested and working, 5870. When I drop her in: long short short no matter how many times I try to re-seat the card.
I went as far as putting the 4870 back in and moving the 5870 to the second slot (no crossfire cable but just to see if it is detected). The computer starts and all but no sign of it being detected.
Dead card or anything else to try?
Its bios A10.

the bios beep code when I try to turn the computer on with the 5870 plugged in

Ask the seller what V-bios it has been flashed with.
-
supposed to be directly out of an r2 but as a slave crossfire card

First thing I would check is your installation method. Check up on some 5870M installation video's on YouTube to make sure its correct. Make sure your x-bracket on the back of the card is positioned properly and not touching any of the components on the PCB, it should be a perfect fit if you're using the correct x-bracket.katalin_2003 likes this. -
Everything fits perfectly
I read a few guides on upgrading the vBios and would try that but... How do you actually load it if you get no display in the first place?!?!
I have not tried to connect an external monitor yet to see if there is any activity there. I guess that is what I can do next
Or...
If I put the 5870 in the second slot again and boot up on the 4870 in my primary slot is that the time to boot on the usb drive and try to select and change the vBios of the 5870? I mean it does not get detected in device manager (like I mentioned earlier) but if the card does not have the correct vBios maybe it simple wont be detected! granted the 4870 drivers are still installed as well but that has nothing to do with the system POSTing.
I am planning to follow the guide here to make the bootup:
http://forum.techinferno.com/genera...738-[guide]-amd-vbios-flashing.html#post21467
I guess if the 5870 is listed as a card to upgrade I am in good shape.
Then I plan on using the vBios and programs from the guide here:
http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m17x-aw-17/51-ati-amd-5870m-vbios-flash.html
Does this sound like a plan or where am I going wrong? -
Sounds like a great plan, great work
Just be careful and make sure you're flashing the right card. Flashing the 5870M vBIOS to the 4870M will brick it and you don't want that
The command to check what cards are installed in your system is...
atiflash -ai
The 4870M should be listed as card 0 and the 5870M as card 1. If you don't see the 5870M then it most likely is a defective card -

I think it is a bad card- not being detected with ATIFlash at all even booting on the dos usb stick. Oh well
-
Sorry to hear that nkarno
Hope you're able to return the card with no hassles. Best of luck! -
So just to be totally sure I threw the 5870 into my m15x and pretty much the same problem. The m15x does not beep but the num and caps light blinks continually and there is no video. I looked up the blink code: bad video card. So I accepted that the video card was dead. Seller said just to keep it, I was refunded.
The next 5870 is on the way. It is a dell version but another rev 00. It was only $100 but it is supposed to be working and has a DOA warranty.
I have catalyst 13.1, 8.970.100.7000 installed. I believe these drivers also are for the 5870 so maybe I can just swap cards and not have to worry about totally removing these drivers and reinstalling. I should know more in a few days.
Then I have to figure out what to do with the bad card. Probably just junk it. I doubt there is anyone that can restore it. -
Bake it
... then if it works, CrossFire them!!!

Meh didn't work :/
oh well, was worth a try -
Try facing the card down, a few guides use that method. Be careful though, not for too long as the previous guide I linked to says the components may drop off.
You've got nothing to loose at this point... best of luck! -
baking both sides didn't work :/ would have been nice
long short short - beep code
