Hi ive been trying to find a way to control my fan speeds on my m17x. if im correct i believe the cpu and gpu share the fans. im not 100% on this but i think that is why programs like rivatuner and NST won't allow me to change the fan speed. Can anyone clarify?

anyways i wanted to know if theres a way where i can set a minimun fan speed or a constant fan speed since these fans never kick in unless the cpu starts to get hot and my cpu mostly never gets very hot. Its the gpu's im worried about and ive noticed when the "cpu" fans are on full blast that my gpu drops in temp also.

The CPU and GPUs all have seperate fans (if you're talking about the new Allpowerful M17x at least).

    Just so you know.

There are utilities I believe that will control fans' speeds...some are even free.

On laptops, the fan speeds are often locked...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for you.

ive tried rivatuner, fanspeed, evga precision, msi afterburner, and even nvidia's tools. in all of them the fan option is greyed out.

also now that i disabled my integrated graphics i can acually here my fans come on when using fur mark, but they arent hitting full blast even when my temps hit 100 celcius +

try uninstalling the programs, or disabling them.

ok so i tested my fans out while playing fallout 3 on full settings. the game didnt make my gpu's get over 75 degrees which is great but i need something that will get them hot so i can see if the fans get any louder. at 75 celcius my fans turned on and i could hear them but i know they werent full blast. they went on for about 30 seconds then stopped. is everything normal? is it just furmark that doesnt turn on my fans? and is that normal?

weird. furmark should be heating the GPU to the max. what system do you have ?

sorry i should've been clearer with my last post. furmark does heat it up to the max temp but my fans don't kick in even when it breaks 100 degrees. is that normal??

of course not, fans should kick in under 60 degrees i believe and accelerate as the heat goes up.
Could you run a CPU stress test and see if the fan kicks in ? i suspect your GPU fan is dead.

my cpu fans kick in during orthos. also i played some fallout 3 to test my gpu temps. they got to about 75 degrees and i heard my fans turn on. but it sounded like they turned on at about 30-40% for maybe 30 seconds then they stopped for about a minute and turned on again. this cycle kept repeating during my 10 minute play-through test. is it just furmark that im having issues with? or should i contact someone?

are the gpu fans supposed to be loud? i used furmark and heard the gpu fans come on but very quietly. i used orthos and my cpu fans where very loud which confirmed they are working correctly. so is this normal for my gpu fans? are they supposed be quiet even after my gpu's pass 100 celcius?

Your gpu should never pass 90 degrees let alone 100. I am assuming you have the m17x r1. Try a power drain:
    turn off
    remove the battery
    disconnect the charger
press power button for 30 seconds
reconnect everything and see if that helps
also I'd try reflashing the bios.

I'm also having problems with my temps. I regularly hit 95-100C when playing SC2 and right now my laptop is idling at 65C and the only program I've started since I turned it on is Chrome. I can hear a fan going...i just don't know which one it is.

Well, is it on the left or on the right side? You can put your ear close and you will hear it.

I figured out the issue. It was just tons and tons of dust. Even without using compressed air, just simply my lung capacity, i blew out enough dust to choke me. After clearing that out, my GPU's are running 15C cooler than they were before. After a long session of SC2, I was only at 85C (and I had even upped the gfx setting since I had just OCed my CPU).
