So, there were reports around this forum of people receiving poorly built laptops. Let me assure you this is not the case with mine. Keep in mind I've only had it for about an hour, but this thing is flawless (nearly).
Give me about an hour or so and I'll upload some pics, etc.
The only flaw I have found so far (hence the "nearly" above) is the right side of the media bar is raised about half a millimeter out of the chassis. This really isn't an issue, and is only noticeable if you run your fingers over it.
Just out of curiosity, is there an easy fix for this?
Someone mentioned a gap in the screen casing just above the hinge-- mine does not have this problem.
I haven't run any games on it yet, but am very anxious to do so.
Is there anything I should configure about my laptop before I get to the games?

Hmm, that is not normal to have a raised bar.
I would try taking it apart and refitting the parts. -
many of us have the raised bar issue...the fix is super glue at this point
-
Hmm raised Media bar? outrageous!!!! Return it and get a refund!
Good to hear man. Mine came flawless too so it shows the problem isnt as rife as it may seem. -
One more flawless M17x here!
...oh except that the wifi driver wasn't installed. So I guess mine was a Google search and an 8mb download away from being truly flawless. -
I need to order mine...I just don't know if I'd use it.

Place a pic of the media bar.
The media bar is a easy part to replace so if it bugs you call Dell and they will replace it. -
Mine was built seemingly flawlessly as well. I haven't had any issues at all with the hardware itself. Looks like we are the lucky ones
-
Meh, media bar was an easy fix. Squirt of superglue to fill the gap, 10 secs to try, and then concentrated acetone on a Q-tip to clean up the mess.
This thing is a beast! Playing Witcher 2 on 56 FPS on high graphics. -
Media bar seems extremely common, we need more people chiming in when they receive a nicely built R3. The public gets scared when all they hear are horror stories.
I bought an Outlet R3 a few weeks ago and it was in perfect shape when I got it. No scratches, dents, dead pixels, No raised media bar. Just ordered another R3 and should have it this friday, will report back on the build quality! -
Everything about this laptop knocks my socks off. Sound, graphics, I/O, aesthetics... I can't believe I own this god-like piece of technology.

Mine was flawless, too (got my first Alienware in mid-June). Although my media bar may be ever so slightly raised, it doesn't bother me at all. It's not like it's sticking up visibly or anything, or popping out for that matter. I used to be really finicky about stuff like that, but I guess I learned my lesson when I received a replacement item (this wasn't a laptop) with the exact same defect -- just on the opposite side! So I don't bother with little stuff anymore (depends on where the defect is and how bad it is, of course) -- it's not worth the hassle to me, maybe because with my luck I'll just get something back that's even worse!

ah...wish mine was as awesome when I received it. Was expecting R2 w/ RGBled and crossfire T_T

I received mine about 6 weeks ago, and I'm still very very happy with this monster. Except one thing: The whole mediabar (by that you mean the mediabuttons above the numpad, right?). It just isnt as good as the rest. The buttons (TBH, I wouldnt call them buttons at all...) are crap.
I'm used to use those functions with the F-buttons on my Macbook and Macbook Pro, buttons which need the excact same power to press as the rest of they keyboard.
Nevertheless, the m17x R3 is still the best laptop I've ever owned (I switched from desktops to laptops only back in 2001) -

Mine was flawless!!
Until the lights broke. Then they sent a tech to replace the motherboard, but the replacee motherboard's wifi pins were defected.... sent another tech with a wifi card but no new motherboard and only realized it when he got there... finally sent another tech with wifi card and motherboard!!!
Works fine now! Must've costed dell quite some cash for all those parts -
I consider mine to be flawless too. I also have the slightly raised media bar but it does not seem to leave any marks on the screen and it's not visible (can only feel that it's raised) so I'm not concerned by it at all.
-
I have a bad metal clip that holds a hard drive screw in how dare they! J/k besides that its nearly flawless.
-
I received my machine and everything is flawless
.
Except!, when I push down on the "Bar" right below the space bar and the touch pad it flexes alot.
Other than that flawless !! -

Nice to hear some positive reviews for a change
-
mine is physically flawless.. but also the framerate in dragon age (and others) with the 120hz is insane.. didnt think it notice the diff from 60hz but hell yeah
-
Is this amount of flex common? -
Just added the other 2 sticks of RAM mine has the cover.

I received my first R3 mid May and it was flawless. I had purchased my wife an XPS at the same time because she didn't like the way the R3 looked by just looking at the pictures. Well, as soon as she saw the R3 she wanted one. So we ended up sending back the XPS and I gave her the R3. Now I'm just waiting for my R3 to arrive...it's suppose to be here by the 16th and I'm just as excited as I was waiting for the first one to arrive.
-
Honestly, I think my wife would be the one waiting! LOL
-
my first m17x had no keyboard flex, and was pretty much flawless except the lighting wasn't somehow even on the speakers. My 2nd one right now has a lot more flex, so guys with no flex, pull up your keyboards and show us why this is!

I've been pretty happy so far with my R3. Beyond the AlienRespawn causing my maximized windows to look funny in the very top of the screen, I haven't had any issues with it, either software or hardware, and that was easily taken care of with 5 minutes of browsing the interwebs.
m17x Just Arrived.... WOW!
