Hey guys, I bought the original m17x and it has been doing fine minus some crazy overheating where I got it to 100C. But the problem i face now, my roommates and I bought a 55" Sony Bravia and I want to play movies/video games on it. Yet when I use an hdmi cable to hook it up, the sound doesnt carry through my cable to the tv, the sound plays off my comp instead of the tv. Any ideas? I would rather not by a headphone jack cable....Thanks you!

I don't have a m17 but on my laptop, I usually have to go into the audio control panel and activate the hdmi sound... try that out!

Right click the volume icon on your task bar > Playback Devices > Set HDMI as Default Device

in your nvidia control panel, go to resolution settings and make sure it's HDMI audio enabled.

I just looked that up in the nvidia control panel. It turns out it was already activated, still doesn't work/transfer sound.

Weird. you should have hdmi listed in your audio devices if it's enabled.

Yeah it is kinda confusing. I called alienware support and since im out of warranty they would have to charge me to fix it. The guy said he could do it, but wouldnt tell me how so i could do it myself. Any ideas? could it be a driver issue?

Try uninstalling your current video drivers then reinstalling the latest verde drivers from nvidia. These drivers come with HD audio drivers for the HDMI port.

I would also recommend turning off PCIE Gen 2 in the graphics section of the BIOS if you use the verde drivers, otherwise you will likely experience random crashes due to a nearly 2 year long incompatability with the verde range of drivers and the M17xR1 bios.

Okay I will try that right away! ..Interesting because I have been getting very random crashes as of late, like 2-7 of them per day. So turn that off in BIOS. Will do. What do you mean "verde" drivers?

Any of the 2xx.xx range of video drivers are called verde drivers (by nvidia).

Oh, my bad...So this is the latest driver I would need for my 260s in SLI which would hopefully assist me in correcting this issue?

Yeah, either those or the newer beta driver (266.24 I think). I can't guarantee they'll work but hopefully we'll get somewhere with the newer hd audio driver that's included with those drivers. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am currently downloading the newer driver. My current driver is version 8.17.12.6658, and my bios is A00. Should i update bios also, and is my gpu driver out of date? just checking in for now

I think 8.17.12.6658 is the CUDA version, not the driver version.
Just install the latest nvidia driver with clean install option.
And your bios is REALLY out of date.
the latest bios is A07. You can download it from dell's drivers page.

Just tried to do a clean install of the 266.58 nvidia driver and it failed. I also noticed that this driver is the exact same one I already have...? not sure what to do now

EDIT: I just tried to clean install again, it worked this time. Will try to hook up to tv now and hopefully the hdmi source is detected.
EDIT..2: Tried plugging it in and attempting to set hdmi source as default, it still in undetected. is it possible that it is a sound driver problem? or some other driver i have yet to install?

This is the audio driver for M17x R1.

Did you reinstall your windows after you got it?
Maybe you forgot to install that.

I'd try re-installing the audio drivers that Thatoe listed above as I found my HDMI port was listed as a IDT audio device rather than a nvidia audio device (my bad, I rarely use my HDMI port). Hopefully this will then list the hdmi as an audio device, then all you will have to do is set it to default when using HDMI.

If you reinstalled windows after you got the machine but did not install this IDT audio driver from the dell site...the HDMI will NOT work. The organic audio driver windows installs works fine but does not include the HDMI driver.

I did install W7 about a month or two ago, I am trying new audio drivers now. Will keep you guys posted. thank you all again for help and advice.
EDIT: Just reinstalled the IDT sound drivers you linked me, downloaded/installed and restarted. Plugged tv back in via HDMI, checked my playback devices, HDMI was listed. Switched it to default and now sound works! Thank you guys very much. You guys are beyond helpful. Only last parting question, would it benefit me to update my BIOS at all, Im at A00 like I stated earlier.

It will benefit you. Each bios update has its own fixes and enhancements.
The last A07, for example, reduced throttling.
I think A06 made the trackpad works so much better.
    etc
If you update to A07, you'll see all those fixes.

Glad to see its working for you now.

You definately should upgrade to A07. It has a lot of fixes for some small and large issues which have shown up over time. Definately worth getting.
