    m17x R2 Power Jack Issue

    Good Morning guys,

    I purchased my m17x r2 back in August 2010 through dell UK and it has run perfect for me until about 4 months ago when I started to experience power problems. Long story short turns out its the solder on the jack to the mobo has become loose/defective. Guy come to replace the mobo, fits it but that turns out to be fried.
    Guy comes back with another mobo a few days later, fits that, but then there's a problem becasue the service tag is incorrect and he'll need to change the mobo for another, sigh. In the process the guy also manages to damage the cord that runs between the mobo and the touch panel.
    So once again a few days later the guy returns with a mobo and cord fits them and bingo all works perfectly.
    Cue 2 days ago when I noticed once again the slightest touch of the power cord near the jack causes the unit to lose power again. Upon gently moving the cord I intermitantly gain and lose power so the same jack problem seems to arose again.

    After ringing tech support today they have also concluded that I need yet another mobo. My issue this time is that they are trying to say that i've caused the damage and will have to pay even though my unit is still under warranty. So I gues my question is, is there some possible way that im causing this or is it simply poor design on dell's part?
    Keeping in mind that I've allways been very careful with it, dont drop it, yank out the power cord etc?

    Has anyone else had similar problems to this with the mobo/jack failing? and where do I stand if they try to claim I've caused the damage?

    Have none of it. They have not got a leg to stand on really. Whats that? 3 defective MOBO's in 4 months they have fitted? Say you want in writing, just why exactly they believe this defective MOBO is because of you and what proof they have to back that up so that you can present it to your solicitor.

    I believe the words "Trading standards, Court action, refund" in some sort of order will get the job done.

    Tell them you have given them more then enough chances to fix the machine and that you want a replacement that will last the warranty they promised it would when you spent ludicrous amount of money back in 2010. :D

    I just started a thread about this mate: R2 power connector. Apparently the R2's DC jack does have a design flaw where the power adapter fits very loosely into the jack. I have to give mine a bit of a tug in order for it to pop loose, but your sounds like how mine was when I first got my system (If I sneezed, the plug would fall out of the jack). As far as the tech's incompetencies and accusations, I'm not surprised. Oh Worldwide Tech Svcs, how nice to know your forking up laptops in several different countries. Now I know its not just me...

    Dont understand why they dont just stick a magnet on it, a la Macbook pro.
