I am getting an exchange m17x R2 finally, after a heck of a time with getting this thing fixed.

My machine has the i7 920xm, 8gb Ram, Crossfire 5870, 256 gb SSD, blu-ray player, RGB LED.

I can't find much info on the factory ram for the laptop. I was looking at maybe getting
    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Laptop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ

I'm guessing though the CAS latencies are probably the same?

    I'm also getting this:
Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD3-2VTX120G 3.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

to use as my primary drive and the 256gb Samsung SSD as my data storage since the Vertex 2 is faster and will be brand new... the samsung wasn't really that impressive when I benchmarked it. Do any of you have this particular SSD linked above and how do you like it?

Anyways, do you guys think the RAM replacement is pointless? I could always sell the factory RAM or hold onto it in case I have a failure or defect in the new sticks I order but idk..

    Thanks for the input.

I would suggest keeping the 256 SSD as your boot drive, and getting a 500 - 750 Gb drive as the data / backup drive

The Samsung is still way faster than a srandard drive.

8 Gb Ram is a nice upgrade, and it should speed up the laptop over all.

I already have 8gb but wasn't sure who the mfg. is and the latency.

The drive I'm making as my primary will be the vertex as I'm not really happy with the samsung 256gb I already have. Ya it could be cheaper to get a regular HDD but I like the speed of the SSD and if I want I can put it in my desktop one day but it was a Christmas present so I wanted the vertex with it's great read. All in all I'll have 376gb of SSD so it should be nice and quick.

The stock ram from Dell is not the best, and definitely better / faster stuff is out there.

Isn't that drive 3.5"? If it is, I don't think it will fit in your R2.

Yeah, I have OCZ and it works really fast. It's the drive where I keep Windows and few games. But I'd assume Samsung is pretty fast too, these are supposed to be fast drives as well. I'm not sure you'll see any (big) difference... or at all.

The RAM upgrade is pointless. If you need more than 4GB, you'll know it without asking.

Yea I decided not to get the RAM. I may just save my money for when some new GPUs come out but who knows. The crossfire 5870s handle all of my needs above and beyond so I'm content.

I'm wondering if my replacement system will have my 920xm in it still... it would be nice to get an upgrade. :D Doubt they look at all the crap they made me go through though when they send out a replacement.
