I have an m17x R3 with a 6990m which has recently died. I've looked around at my options a bit, but wanted more input from anyone who has gone through the same thing recently.

I know there's a guide here on how to upgrade to a 7970 which seems fairly straightforward. Are the NVidia cards also an option? Is there anything fancy I need to do in order to go from what was initially an AMD setup to a NVidia card? If that's possible, then it seems that the 680/780/880m would be in play as well. I assume the NVidia cards will likely use different heatsink assemblies from AMD though.

    Thoughts?

    Hey man

I recommend you take a look at this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m17x-r3-upgrade-gpu-to-980m-cpu.764274/

Anyway I personally recommend you go for an Nvidia gpu. Your best bet would be either a 780m or 880m but as a former owner of a 880m I can tell you that it runs VERY hot so many here will recommend going for the 780m instead... I haven't heard of anyone getting a 980m to run on the m17x R3 but if it can then please let someone correct me...
