Hey all,
Thanks for the continued support. Below, please find my half-donkeyed review which I typed up in like less than 3 hours.
Dookie11’s m17x R3 review
-Being that this is my first Dell purchase, my 3rd laptop, and my 1st gaming laptop, I was very excited since the first day I chose the m17x R3 as my computer-to-buy for grad school/home-use. I’m fortunate enough to have a brother who’s in the Navy, so I was able to take advantage of a rare opportunity: 30% off discount via AAFES. This also meant that I would not have to pay the dreaded CA sales tax (tax is 10.25% here!), as well as shipping. Therefore, the almost 1 year of searching, and nearly the same time saving money from work definitely PAID OFF!
-Specs/Config:
-2720
-stock 4gb ram
-6970M
-1080p 60hz
-stock 320gb hdd
**Note: this review may seem subjective, as I indicated long long ago. I do hope that most of the information I provide will be useful to folks shopping around though. Also, keep in mind that I’m no computer whiz. I’m just an average user, with average knowledge of computers, but I’m very picky(aka nitpicky) when it comes to buying things so I hope that part helps in this review.**
-Initial Impression:
My first impression of the shipping box was 50/50. I was impressed that it was double-boxed, and the box arrived without any dents or holes or anything that I’ve seen in other purchases I’ve made online. Adequate foam padding for the lappy itself, as indicated by many others before. However, I was not impressed that the outside box had a big FAT white sticker with the Intel logo on it, and also, on all 4 sides towards the bottom of the box is ALIENWARE with the logo. Not very safe if you live in the hood or will have it shipped to somewhere that a family member cannot receive it for you… Other than that, the contents inside appeared to be all there, and yup, I prolly won’t be wearing that hat eitherThe mousepad is really nice though, and is really smooth and my optical mouse doesn’t “skip”. Please see YT video for the stuff that came in this config’s package.
-Build quality:
The R3’s build quality is like what I had hoped for: mostly hard plastic all the way around, with little to no give in most areas. It’s actually the mostly the same shape as the Dell Vostro 3400 14” laptop I use at work. The rubber coating is pretty nice, very similar to the G73 that I’ve seen at BestBuy. It’s smooth kinda like matte-leather belts or wallets, which is pretty damn sexy.
-Keyboard flex. And I’ve had a lot of gripes with all these modern-day laptop OEMs selling us cheapy/flimsy keyboards. Surprisingly, THIS Dell product doesn’t have much flex (if any) in all spots of the keyboard. The Vostro at work even has more flex than this, which is pretty neat. It still can’t compare with my HP DV2610us which has ZERO flex though, and this was a $650 lappy from Fry’s. Around the kb, as indicated by others, there is a frame. Mine appears to be aligned properly and is flush with the system. The media buttons are kinda cool, and click in similar to some cell phones (sorta like Motorola’s razr phone). The keyboard, when typing, feels good. It’s clicky clack and not sticky, like any regular old laptop keyboard, so I’m very satisfied with it. The touchpad is VERY large IMO, and is very responsiveThe buttons are very quiet, and buttery smooth to click.
-But, but, but... as always when you’re as picky as I am: I noticed that this computer came damaged. On the lid, there’s a 1inch scratch. It’s not deep, but it’s very annoying if you run your finger across it. In a photo on my picasa page, you can see that it looks like the shape of a sideways V, like the “>” on your keyboard. Also, when the lid is closed, it’s a bit misaligned, roughly 1-2mm to the right, towards the top end of the monitor, near the speaker grills area. I will actually be getting a replacement system this Friday, hopefully. Aside from that, I’m mostly satisfied with the laptop’s build quality.
-Accessories and other stuff:
-Power brick and plug: As you can see in my picasa album, the brick is HUGE. It’s bigger than my graphing calculator! It is, fortunately, only 3/4” thick. The tip is lit which makes it easy for your to locate if you’re plugging it while in bed in the dark.
-Sealed literature: As others have stated, the m17x no longer comes with a leather-bound notebook-style booklet. Very little info in it as well, which is sad, cuz what if I need to fix my computer and OBVIOUSLY have no access to the internet to look at the manual online for disassembly/maintenance/etc?!. Warranty info is there, fortunately.
-Comes with Windows 7 disc (yay!), and a drivers disc.
-Comes with a AW logo hat and sticker. Not sure if I’ll use either one.
-Comes with a SPDIF? connector, which I personally have no clue how to use/what it’s for lolz.
-Lastly, an AW mousepad. I love this thing! It’s big, smooth, heavy-duty, and my crappy Logitech mouse just flies across it, without ever “skipping”. As a reminder, I come from a clipboard, a white sheet of paper, and a notebook as my former mousepads, so I’m very impressed by this inclusion
![]()
-Startup:
-At first, it takes a while for it to boot up and stuff, cuz it’s setting up Windows 7. No biggy. Takes a while longer cuz of the AW skin for Win7 also. I kinda hate that the time you get to press F2 for the BIOS is really short though, as I’ve missed it several times lol. This is even more frustrating when you do it for the first time, and don’t get to catch what the heck button it is to get into the BIOS![]()
-Other than that, it seems to be pretty fast. I have to say though, my dinodesktop and dinolaptop which are both running Win7 Ultimate 32-bit start up a bit faster than this (and also faster than the MSI GT680R that I saw at Frys the other day). Maybe cuz of the single-core speed, iono? I was totally expecting bootup to be about twice as fast as this, since it’s 2011. Maybe I’m just asking for too much though, meh.
-The screen:
-I ordered 1080p 60hz. This is my first 1080p screen ever, so I was very impressed how companies can mash something that is usually sold on high-end TVs onto this 17.3” screen. WOW. I’m coming from a 1600x900 20inch led backlit monitor, which was only purchased about 6-8months ago as an upgrade/replacement for a Hewlett-Packard CRT 15” monitor which was purchased in year 2000 (R.I.P., buddy). So naturally, I had and still have no idea what to do with all this desktop space.
-It’s very bright, colors are very colorful. Only thing is, by default, everything looks teeny no matter how close I sit.**
-Speakers and media buttons:
-All is well on my end. The speakers have a “surround sound” sound to them, by default. I LOVE IT. I usually have them on 15% volume, and occasionally on 25% when I’m feeling extremeToday, I tried at the suggestion of another user on NBR, 50% and then 100%. Both were very satisfying and were very loud for laptop speakers. No rattle, no buzzing. I LOVE IT!
-Media buttons are very easy to use. I think I’ve read that others may be unsatisfied. Overall, I like them though, and this is prolly cuz I have petite hands/fingers. One thing that’s annoying though, and this is a software issue, is that when you click volume up or down while in a game, it minimizes your screen cuz there’s an on-screen indicator window that pops up to show your increase/decrease. This happened in my hp, and I eventually uninstalled the program. So by default, your R3 will do this, and you’re gonna get pissed. Don’t fret though, as there’s hardly any lag when this happens, simply cuz our computers are SO FREEKIN FAST![]()
-Purrty lights n stuff:
-Yup. Purrty lights. I’ve seen and heard of backlit kbs and logos on the lid, but damn! This thing can give me LAKERS colored lights! WOOHOO. Only caveat is the AW logo on the lid doesn’t change colors. The speaker grill area is pretty neat too, in terms of lighting. Because the lights are positioned towards the inside/center of the lappy, naturally it looks like a gradient. This is actually pretty sexy imo.
-Performance, hardware:
-I got the 2720 + 6970M + stock 4gb ram + stock 320gb combo. For the most part, performance and speed seems the same when you’re doing regular everyday tasks, like surfing the web or watching youtube vids. When I was running an AVG scan and trying to open up another program, however, it was kinda disappointing. Where’s this uber “multitasking” power that I had assumed newer tech had?? I asked someone on NBR, and he said that it’s because of the hdd, which led to all this lag. I guess the hdd is trying to access the files, and can’t keep up…So maybe I should upgrade to an SSD one day.
-Graphics: Golly! I still have no idea what I’m gonna do with this GPU. For now, it does everything I want it to do with SC2. I also installed BFBC2, and was able to run it at max-settings, with zero lag issues. Didn’t play very long though, as I had to update it due to weird mouse issues.
-WLAN: While sitting upstairs at my gf’s house, she was using my old hp lappy, and I was on my R3. The old lappy cannot get wifi signal from upstairs, and will only show 1bar in the system tray icon. R3 had 3-4 bars at any given time, and I was able to stream an NBA game, while she had to resort to a net cable to watch her dramasAt home, I use wireless, and the router is roughly 40 feet away from me, going through 3 walls. I get 4 bars at all times, and 54mbps most of the time, with 48mbps being the lowest. My desktop, which has a wireless antenna and sits right next to this lappy, gets 4 bars and 54mbps all the time. As you can see, the stock wireless net card on this lappy is EXCELLENT imo.
-R3 slooooooowww on battery?: No way, mang. The other day, I was asked to run GPU-Z while gaming on SC2 with the battery and then unplugging it to check if the numbers changed. According to what I saw in the log, and what was displayed in GPU-Z, it remained a steady 400/900 regardless of what happened. There was the occasional 100/150, but that happened at random during either battery or plugged. FPS was at 45-55 at all times, while on max everything. Someone will have to review my log file that I updated in the R3 slooooooowww on battery thread though.
-BSODs! Yup you read correctly. I got 2 BSODs in the 2nd day of ownership. The first BSOD was when I was updating to SP1 via Windows Update. No idea the reason why, but it happened while it was dling the update… The 2nd BSOD occurred during the update of BFBC2. It reached a little under 50% of a very long update, and outta nowhere a blue screen. No idea why either. Haven’t gotten once since then though, and it’s now 4 days after I first received the lappy.
-Switchable graphics + BATTERY LIFE:
-This by far is my favorite feature of the R3. Having the ability to hardcore-game OR being able to sit through a 3hour lecture on a single charge is simply amazing. I’m glad that Dell realized that ppl who own lappies don’t game ALL THE TIME, and actually use it for something other than that. I mostly use: right click on desktop, go to “Configure Swtichable Graphics,” rather than Fn+F7, because you have to click on Yes anyways. For the most part, switching is good. I don’t mind that the screen flickers and blinks to black and then back to your desktop, cuz this happens for like 5 seconds or so total.
-While on the IGP, with max brightness, WLAN on, windows media player playing some mp3s, volume at 10%, and battery displaying 96% in the system tray, it said 4hours and 27minutes remaining. That’s pretty bad-butt if you ask me. I know that the same day I took that screenshot, the time jumped a bit higher, close to 5hours while at like 90something % battery life. PRETTY darn cool.
-While on the GPU, I think you should get about 3hours with the same settings as listed above, doing regular stuff.
-If gaming on the GPU, expect probably around 1-1.5 hours at most, which Is still pretty good.
-Temperatures:
-Subjectively speaking, if I put my hand about an inch away from the top of the keyboard (while playing SC2), I can feel some heat, but its kinda like if you put your hand over a bowl of steamed rice.
-The cooling system on this lappy, as I understand it so far, are VASTLY SUPERIOR to any others I’ve ever seen/used. When I first turned on the computer, I got freaked out about how I didn’t hear the fans come on/stay on/turn on, and then immediately posted my fears on NBR. Someone informed me that it’s due to the nature of this good cooling system, and he definitely was right. Only on occasion do I hear the fan come on. Notice the singular “fan.” It’s only the left fan (which I think is the cpu fan). This occurs while doing anything. The only time the right side fan (gpu fan) comes on is after like 3 minutes after I’ve started up SC2). It has never come on while gaming on Dolphin or Super Mario Bros X, which prolly means those games are more IGP dependent than GPU dependent, which is really neato!
-I’ve never had it on my lap, so I can’t say the bottom gets hot.
-I generally raise my laptops, and usually put them on top of a textbook, a binder, or a Scrabble box. My R3 has been sitting on a 2inch thick calculus book, which is a bit narrower than the width of the R3, allowing for ample airflow into the vents underneath. Toward the front, the palmrest section is held up by a 4pack of post-its
. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s due to this “setup” that prolly leads to the fans hardly coming on.
-Ports:
-Lots of ports and holes on the sides. The USB 3.0 are really fast. I connected my old usb 2.0 external hdd, which has a sata 3gb 7200rpm 32mb cache WD Black drive inside, and transferred like ~15gb to the lappy in like 10minutes, as opposed to what it would’ve taken on my old computer (more than 30minutes, I’m sure).
-Yes, I did receive the dummy card.
-All port holes are very tight, and feel like they should. If you tap on the port holes with your fingertip, you won’t hear that tap-tappy sound like a lot of other lappies, either.
-***HDMI-In: This is a very popular feature of the R3s. Overall, I like that is has this feature, but find it to be slightly inconvenient, because you have to click Fn+F8 for it switch to the HDMI-In. Also, you have to have your device “On” and as a working “source” for it to display. I.e., when I connected my PS3 and did not yet power it on, and I hit Fn+F8, nothing happened. It was not until the PS3 finished loading up, did Fn+F8 actually switch to displaying my PS3 XMB. So, it’s not like a tv where you can have a blank HDMI channel that is waiting for your source. I do like however, that you can adjust volume from the media buttons when in HDMI-In mode. The volume stinks though. Not very loud at all. I wonder if you can do the thing where you have only video come in from HDMI and have sound come from RCA cables>3mm converter>into an audio-in jack in the R3?
-Gaming Experience:
-SC2. Max everything. 45-55 fps mostly.
-Super Mario Bros X. Runs smoothly (this is a very cpu dependent game for some reason).
-Dolphin emulator: averages about the same FPS as SC2 on max, if not higher, topping off at 60FPS in any game. The one that hits it hardest so far, is F-Zero GX only because it’s a really graphic intensive game.
-Btw, I can play Dolphin while on the IGP and while on battery, as I noticed shortly after posting my video on youtubeRight after I closed Dolphin, I looked down on my floor for something, and noticed I wasn’t plugged in. I plugged it in. And then, I was thinking of switching back to the IGP, so I right clicked my desktop and went to “Configure Switchable Graphics.” Guess what? I was ALREADY ON THE IGP. So one can conclude: WOW WOW WOW! Dolphin on IGP and on battery! WOW!
Overall Impression so far:
-I love it so far. Though I have a few gripes, those will hopefully be solved with my replacement lappy. I hope that this review, though a bit brief and not very technical, was at least a bit helpful if you’re deciding on purchasing the m17x R3. I know that many have ordered, and their wait time is very long, but once it’s received, MOSTLY happiness will followFor visual pleasure, and reference, please visit the links in my sig for my YT page and picasa page. And as always, if you have any requests, please post or PM me.
**Posts and benchmarks to come soon**
-
let me be the first to say, congrats dookie!!!
-
gameplay vids? my request lol
-
Videos coming soon. They're pretty crappy though, cuz I'm using my point n shoot Canon's camcorder function. I must admit, decent fps though(30fps). Also, crappy cuz I have no idea what I'm doing hahah.
-
lol
just glad you finally got it/configured the way you desired, and it's worth the wait and then some!!!
-
Great you got yours
ok thats the first box, wheres the laptop in the vid?
One thing of interest is, Dell give everyone a mouse mat and no mouse, wish they would change the hat for a mouse, the price tag should demand it. -
Wow, not sure if the computer's broken or something, but the fans are like nonexistent! Silent and not spinning? (this is when I just booted it up, and set up the time and date and stuff).
About 15 minutes later, I plugged it in after fiddling with stuff, and went to get the WEI rating, and now it's running the thingy, and the fans both kicked in. Cool or not cool? Please advise.
Also, one last thing: When I use the IGP, and set it on minimal brightness, each time I open up a window, the screen gets a little brighter or dims back to minimal. Is this okay? Seems kinda weird to me that it wouldnt just stay at 0% brightness. (the gauge still says minimal all the time). -
I agree on the changing the hat with a mouse. If you search youtube and watch all the unboxing videos most of the people comment on the hat and that they are probably not going to wear it. lol. One guy says something like probably not going to wear it; Do gamers wear hats?
LMAO
Anyhow, where is the vid of unboxing your R3? even if no vid lets see some pics. Please help to keep us sane while we are waiting. -
Just thought about it. My wireless mouse died about a year ago and I have never replaced it. Now I'm going to have a new mouse pad and I'm not going to be even able to use. They should def switch the hat with a cool a** mouse.
-
-
Just watched the video again. Whats up at the 12 second mark? It looks like your pointing to the computer and telling it to wait right there, you will be back for it. lol. Come on your killing me/us. We need some more video/pics!!!
-
Roger that on the same as everyone else's. Not really requesting anything special. If you want to do video that's good. Pics that's good. Anything man. Throw a dog a bone.
I'm really getting excited, because the fact that you got yours means that mine should be right around the corner!!! -
-
Please find attached a photo of the top of the lid. There's already a scratch on the rubber coating. It's totally spray on, guyz. You can see that underneath that spray-on rubber, is glittery plastic. From an angle, you can see the silvery glitter. The scratch is negligible though, but I just wanted to share with you guys the picture...
For the rest of the computer, construction is very similar to the Dell Vostro 3400 at work. I kinda expected it to be, since the shape is very similar. Overall, nothing I don't mind. It's not as heavy as you guys made it sound either... Maybe I'm getting macho from posting on these forums so much
More pix, and video coming. -
Stupid thing, won't upload the photo...
Here it is: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iWLcaY_7em856aIaULBhzSsjB2kCMmYVJfeaOXWTQ34?feat=directlink -
Anyway no fans on battery would be normal with large heatsinks. Both the CPU and GPU will drop speed and voltages way down -
-
Woops. Double post. Internet's going crazy now that there's 2 computers online at once
-
Yeah it will be sweet, you have only just opened it, still likely hasn't warmed up much from a cold start. Even then it not working to hard from what you say.
Sounds good to me, once you load both the CPU and GPU heavily for a lenght of time, then those fans will start to pump.
From what you are currently doing, and install of software, the CPU will on speedstep and running low voltages, the GPU would be idle with low-med clocks and low voltage as well. -
I'm planning to try the PS3 on it in a bit so I'll record thatBut, any ideas for the next video? Something relevant please, that noone else has posted yet.

Some photos. https://picasaweb.google.com/107667078461233991335/M17xR3#
Oh yeah, I get the curvy looking keyboard tooStupid cameras why are they like that?
-
EDIT: NM, it was behind the AVG window
God, I love the touchpad on this thing.. -
-
-
-
What else have you done other than AVG?
-
Yes you can click on black or white. Black and red is easily doable, and actually looks pretty cool. You can do pulse too, which is blinking black and red. And you can also do morph black and red, which not sure what it does, but yeah. haha
And yes, liking it so far. The build quality is pretty similar to the Dell Vostro 3400 as I stated earlier. I just opened notepad, and pressed random keys in different spots of the keyboard (not with macho force, but with mildly stronger force than usual), and hardly any flex. It's not bad actually.
Currently, I'm running the virus scan, and will install SC2 tonight. It's already 12am lolz. In a sec, I'm gonna plug in my ps3. -
-
-
-
-
-
For now, enjoy my video of PS3 being hooked up to the R3. You can adjust volume via those button thingies at the top of the R3 (what is that section of the lappy called again?). And as you see in the video, it'll switch back to your desktop once the HDMI device shuts off. Pretty neat. Too bad the screen quality isn't as good---it's got fuzzies.
-
-
-
I reloaded youtube page and there are still only 3 vids. Nothing with the PS3.
Come on your teasing me/us. LOL
I appreciate you trying to appease us and keep us sane, but you said the video was up there and I can't find it. I starting to get un-sane. LOL -
Also, can someone respond to this question of mine I had on page 1? : When I use the IGP while on battery, and set it on minimal brightness, when I open up a window, the screen gets a little brighter or dims back to minimal. Is this okay? Seems kinda weird to me that it wouldnt just stay at 0% brightness. (the gauge still says minimum brightness all the time). I will upload a video detailing this in a sec. -
OK got it now!!! Thank you much!
So the blurriness wasn't to be contributed due to youtube? It was on your screen like that? Hard to tell for any of us just watching the video on another screen. I thought it was the youtube at first then remembered that you said it was fuzzy. -
I'm def gonna check the 360 out on it after I get it. Will let you all know how it goes. (I haven't seen or heard any other reviews that have tested the PS3 or 360 on the input of the R3) -
-
-
-
OK it is DEF a bit after 0400 now. I have got to get to bed. I will catch everyone tomorrow. Thank you much dookie for posting the pics and vids. After the first few, I thought I was going to go insane waiting for mine. (I just couldn't wait any longer), but after the last few, you have def helped to keep me sane another day. Thank you much Brother!
-
-
I will be testing out a few games, and will share my thoughts on those. Also, the USB 3.0 slots on the left side are hella fast. Transferring 9gb from external hdd to the R3 took only like 5 minutes.. WOWSIES! -
So about that screen dimming/brightening(slightly) while I'm on the IGP on battery, with minimum brightness... It only does it on the minimum, 1 step after that, and 2 steps after the minimum. Step = clicking FN+F4 once to increase brightness level. At the 4th click and above, it behaves normally.
Can someone explain this? Do I have a faulty IGP? Or is this something that it does automatically? **I tried videotaping it, but the camera doesnt capture it well. However, this problem, it's actually like when you're looking at your screen on your camera, and how it adjusts the light/brightness according to the brightness of your environment.** -
Congrats dookie! See, You got your system before even arrive at America.
-
Hey congrats dookie..About time huh? lol
-
Wow man your first day and it's already scratched? lol.
