Hello. A lot of people are having the same issues Ive been having with mine since I got it. Below are the steps used to turn this machine into an amazing build. And yes this will allow you to disable the intel crap chip and get rid of nasty optimus. No more bsod! Dont return the computer.. remove the dellizms!
Computer : Alienware m17x R3 2720i7 - 8gigs - 320hd - GTX460 (unkown if it will work with others) - 60hz screen not the 120hz or 3d model.
I did a clean install from the disc that came with alienware. I did not use the chipset drivers.
1. Update the bios with A08 from dell site.
2. Find the modded bios made by AHMED HOSSAM. This is the link, if it doesnt work it got changed. (ALINWARE17XR3 A08 REMOVED THROTTLE PACKAGE.rar ( ALINWARE17XR3 A08 REMOVED THROTTLE PACKAGE.rar) I did not use the A04 bios that was in this. Only the A08! He recommends using the LVNeptune flashing instructions to make a Crisis disk found here ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...case-you-brick-your-m17xr3.html#post7791370)). That is up to you, I did not follow this step and just chanced it. Having just the dell A08 installed did the trick.
3. In the second advanced options goto Primary display and disable IGP. You must also enable PEG. The default is set on SB.
4. lastly this will want you to install the Nvidia drivers. The new version has been made available in forums that has been modified to work on our laptops. Here is the version 280.26 that works. (nvidiaforums.s3.amazonaws.com/dell.zip)
5. Using custom setup remove the 3d vision from the install. I left the hd audio driver didnt hurt anything.
Hope this helps someone out there.. has been a long and painful road but im getting 280 fps in cs source and no more BSOD driver power state failures : ).
