    hi,

I've recently bought on Ebay an alienware m17x R3 with an 580m graphics card and this person added windows 10 into it

I recently bought a 870m for the laptop

I followed the procedure to install it with the bios mod and it works perfectly. soo when I turn the "high definition audio" sound back on in the bios, I keep getting a light blue or grey screen before the login screen and I get stuck there unable to do anything. Is there something I did wrong?!?!

    please help!

I have an Alienware M17xR3 with an nVidia 680M graphics card. The laptop can run Windows 7 Ultimate, Debian GNU/Linux stretch V9.x.xxx, and Fedora WS 25. Dell does not support Windows 10 on my version of the laptop. I wonder if reinstalling Windows 7, if you have it, along with the installation of the proper drivers would be the cure. As you may already know, Windows 7 will not directly install nVidia drivers because Dell has not authenticated those nVidia drivers with Microsoft. It is necessary to strip the metadata and install the nVidia drivers as unknown software. I have no certainly that the procedure will actually solve your problem. However, if some of the other users verify the solution, then I would recommend it for you. Nonetheless, it worked for me.

Your notebook can run windows 10 just fine. I got a friend with an even older AW running windows 10 as well. Also OP's issue is clearly dead GPU, no reinstall will help the guy out. Also i don't even know where you get the whole story about dell authentification with microsoft stuff from.

kinda true since I had to manually search for drivers. windows wasent able to help me locate some drivers that were missing due it being an older version of windows.....my "hdmi in" sound wasent working before I installed the graphics card into my laptop.
I also tried installing idt audio drivers from the Dell website that's supposed to be for this laptop when I heard I just needed to install the audio drivers after I install the graphics card in it but drivers were not compatible with win 10

soo I'm starting to think it just might be it

kepler gen 2/3 have problems in M17x R3. The trick you can do, you must uninstall all idt audio drivers, uninstall all nvidia drivers, reboot, disable sound in the BIOS, install nvidia drivers, reboot, enable sound in the BIOS, then install IDT audio drivers.

if that does not work, no fix. Kepler gen 1 like 680M work without any problem, I have spare if you are interested

since the drivers were made for windows 7 should I go back to it and then install everything, and can I go back to windows 10 if it's a good idea?

Probably not, windows 10 is driver hell for old machines.
