Hello. I was here a while back asking for some help with a 980m installation for my m17x R4. I decided to do an EGPU setup instead for the same price instead and pulled the trigger on a 980ti. It's not the prettiest setup but it gets the job done. However, I think I'm having issues with performance, as the 3dmark 11 test I performed doesn't seem to be up to my expectations.

This result is from the initial benchmark after I got the eGPU setup. I was wondering if there's anything that's preventing it from performing or is it a limitation from an eGPU setup?

    Thanks.

EDIT: For those curious how it looks at the moment

It's a limitation of the eGPU setup and 12k is quite high even for that. The problem with eGPU setups is that they work ok in benchmarks but don't perform that well in games itself. Mostly the minimum framerate is quite poor, pci-e x2 has quite poor bandwidth compared to a x16 slot. So the performance with even a 970m would be much better in games due to it having the full x16 bandwidth slot.

I used a eGPU setup with a GTX660TI on a HP Elitebook 8470p and even my older GTX765m in the AW14 was much much faster in games like BF3 due to the 660 being bottlenecked like a *****.

eGPU setup's like these are generaly great for laptops that lack the ability to upgrade the GPU and have a mini pci-e slot (or when having thunderbolt which has a much higher bandwidth), but that's not the case for the R4 which can be upgraded quite easily.

So my advice would be to sell the egpu setup and buy a 970m/980m

I appreciate the reply. I was afraid that was the case. It was a fun little project to try out. I was thinking of actually building a computer around the 980ti in this case instead of upgrading the internal graphics card.
