I have had my m17x since September last year and not had any real issues with it, until now, on playing mech warrior 3 and battlefield 3 after about 1 to 2 hours of play it just shuts down,no warning, no reboot, just completely and instantly powers down.

has this happened to anyone else? - anyone know how i fix it?

    Thanks
    Ty

Update, so having tried uninstalling and re-installing my drivers (675m) it is now not reseting but presenting the following error.

"Display Driver NVIDIA windows kernel Mode driver, version 310.90 stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

The screen goes black then glitches then returns the above message.... i have tried removing all drivers using driver sweep in safe mode and a completely fresh install and still nothing, I have done a search for the error but it seems to be elusive and no common fix for it, some say drivers, some direct x some say hardware failure or ram failure, im at a loss as my laptop was running perfectly before this :(

I have a friend who had similar issue but with wow and in the end had to replace gpu, I tried everything, diff/older drivers, reinstalls, clean install of win7 but nothing solved the issue. The moment gpu was replaced everything worked perfectly fine. So I guess it's time to call dell and use the warranty.

Had same problem with my 580 GTX, only a new GPU helped it.

Have you ever performed any type of maintenance on the heatsink radiators and the system fans? - could possibly be shutting down due to high temperatures. If you check them and they are full of dust and debris, give 'em a good clean out and retry - might help with the shutdowns. As for the temporary black screen, that's a Nvidia driver TDR/timeout error and is related to the drivers themselves. If you can, why not try the latest Nvidia drivers from their website for your gpu.

Thats the 1st things i tried Stevie, checked temps, checked for blockages etc, Just called Dell who ran some tests on remote desktop, they are booking a guy to replace my GFX card so hopefully that will do the trick. :)

Well, the dell guy arrived and fitted a new GFX card but the error is the same, in fact it has gotten worse, previously the screen would go black with a brief display of garbage / corrupt screen etc then go black for 1 to 3 minuets but then recover so i could continue till the next time it happened.

Now however the screen blacks out as `normal` after about a 2 mins but wont recover without a hard reset rendering the laptop useless ;(

Thanks for your link Luis, all good info, my laptop is used on a flat wooden desk on a dalman laptop cooler in my study, ambient temps are normal & i checked the fans / vents which were for the most part clear.

The tech guy said its likely the motherboard or cpu, most likely the motherboard as when trying to check the beep codes i got 19! tried 4 times in all, got 19 beeps every time, 3 dell reps have told me their shouldn't be a beep code for 19.

so far the laptop has had a replacement screen, replacement PSU, replacement graphics card, and now a replacement motherboard, it remains to be seen if a replacement cpu is required, i get that they need to do things sequentially but if you were to consider the customer and send both cpu and mobo it would mean i don't need to take more days off work & minimise the amount of downtime as i use this laptop for work too!

To think this thing is only 8 months old!! glad i took out extended warranty.

since i plan on keeping it and can upgrade the cpu and gpu, no brainer for me.

I strongly suggest you do Ericmcn, My mother board was replaced today & while the guy was on site the laptop worked fine, now i have started running games again it's started falling over every 5 mins whuch to me says overheating but both cpu and gpu have been re-pasted though so im left with 2 site visits with no fix.

The only thing left of the original laptop is the cpu and the ram, Please someone from dell tell me what you can do about this, i simply do not have the time to take off work to deal with this anymore!
