from what i can remember on my R2, i had to install the drivers from the Dell website and then go into control panel and there you have a seperate control panel for the volume mixer.(not the windows sound settings, i looks a green/blue'ish icon)
Using the default audio panel from Windows will not be active untill you start setting you audio config in the new audio control panel.

Again....this could also be a driver issue.
    Did you try newer/older drivers?

ermmm well no not really :)
In control panel you have to have a seperate audio control....do you even have that or do you only have the default windows sound panel?

    hm, just thought of something....

try downloading the:"ATI HDMI Audio Device" driver HERE

Perhaps that will work for you?

The audio thru HDMI takes a separate driver which is supposed to be installed with the Catalyst Control Center. See the photo, the HDMI/DP audio driver is listed underneath the display driver. [IMG] You need to do what unphoto said.

    1. Uninstall Catalyst control center. Restart.
    2. Then go into your device manager, see if the 5870m card is showing up under the display adapters list. If it is, then click it, right-click and select uninstall. In the confirmation box, check the box that say "delete the software driver for this device". Then hit OK. Once it's done, restart.
    3. Go back into device manager and check the display adapters list again. The 5870m should show up as "generic VGA adapter". If it still shows up as an AMD/ATI device, repeat step 2. The idea is to remove all the display drivers so you start fresh (without having to clean install Windows).
    4. Once the 5870m shows up as a "generic display adapter", go to Driver Details | Dell United States and download the stock ATI 5870m drivers from Dell.
    5. Install them and make sure the HDMI/DP audio driver box is checked. You can do this by selecting custom installation and making sure the audio driver is going to be installed.
    6. After installation, restart and see if the HDMI audio works. This is the process for the R2, and I know you have the R1. But I was told the 5870m process the audio itself as opposed to older ATI cards (which came stock with the R1) that pass the audio off to the motherboard's integrated sound codec.

The link in my post was to the stock Catalyst control panel and drivers from the Dell site. Once you install the stock drivers you can download the newest Catalyst package from AMD.

EDIT: yeah we can do team viewer if you want.

Possibly. Does the ATI/AMD HD Audio device show up under sound devices in Device Manager?

That could be the HDMI port on the motherboard being loose then. Or it could be the HDMI cable. Or it could be your display device (TV or monitor) needs to have the audio input set over to HDMI. One thing to consider if you're trying to send audio to an HDTV, check which HDMI port your M17x is plugged into. With my Sony, HDMI 4 won't accept audio from the HDMI port, only from the RCA jacks. I guess that port is meant for a DVI to HDMI setup using the RCA jacks for audio from a DVI source. Just a thought...

Just a hip shot, what's the VBIOS your 5870m is running? GPU-z or HWinfo will tell you.

That all looks good there. So is your HDMI port loose on your notebook? I mean REALLY loose. Mine give a bit of wiggle but it's not so loose that it will fall out on it's own or if you blow on it.

That's pretty loose for the signal to be lost entirely if the plug wiggles around a bit. I can wiggle my HDMI cable around whilst plugged into the port and not lose audio or video. You're right, it may be a hardware problem with the HDMI port itself.
