i heard that it's possible to replace the motherboard from a r1 with a r2, i want to confirm this is true, and also what else might need to be replaced, would it be 100% compatible fit(usb ports? other ports?) anything going to be out of place? such as heatsinks fans

yea i read that but i also heard of other conflicting info such as something else has to be replaced and also there's no conclusion on whether the guy solved his audio problems, just wondering. if the motherboard is physically the same i don't see why not, but also what about he heatsink, due to them being newer processor might require bigger heatsinks or i'm not sure.

Well I had an R1 and now an R2. Theres a few differences in the boards. First of all the cpu support will be different. In my R1 I had hybrid graphics and the cpu heatsink actually also cooled the integrated graphics as well. The R2 does not have the hybrid grpahics so the heat sink is different. I know the monitor options were different for the two models so you might have to check support for that. Also the GPU support was different between the R1 and the R2 so you might have to upgrade there to.

I think you would have much better luck just upgrading your R1 or look into buying an R2 in the dell outlet. Post the specs of your current computer.

My system is a refurbished system in which, originally, a R1 system was installed (i cold tell from the windows vista- and the core 2 extreme sticker)

Although i did not do the installation myself obviously you can install an R2 system in it provided you have all other R2 eqiupment like mobo and daughter boards etc...

Sounds goods as an experiment. But in practical terms, I think you have to expend $300+ for a R2 motherboard, plus $300+ on a i7 processor (and maybe you have to change video cards and heat sinks). Given $600+ ... I think you better sell the R1, add a little of cash and get an already made R2.
