I have replaced my 5870m cf in my m17x r2 to a single 7970m, everything else seems work fine so far apart from this "wired" shut downs of the gpu.

The thing is, my machine automactically shuts down every time when the 7970m's temp reaches 87 degress, which looks to me pretty unreasonable as I thought the max temp limit for this gpu should be somewhere around 100 degrees at least?

    btw, my 7970m is a dell 7970m.

    any help will be grateful!

Try downloading the modded A10 BIOS. With them you can modify the shutdown temps of the CPU & GPU. See if that solves your wired shutdowns.

I'm already on modded a10 bios, but i never knew it allows me to adjust gpu shutdown temps, can you please clarify a bit?

unfortunately, i can't view the image source for some reasons...

I can see there is an option for cpu shutdown temp control in the bios, but nothing's there for gpu, and even if it does, 7970m is a new card, so I don't think it is supported, but thanks anyway.

(In case everything else fails to fix this issue ) my advice would be to do a repaste with IC Diamond 7, as this card should be very ''cool'' you should be able to operate at 80'C max.
Does the fan controll works ok ?

Seems like you're the first with 7970m in R2 :)

Does HWiNFO work with your system? You could try out a more aggressive custom fan profile.

hmm...i've tried several thermal pastes already, i.e. tuniq tx-4, mx-4, Prolimatech pk-1 with some other thermal pads, so I think my temps are ok, it idles @ 32-38 degrees, and maxs @ 74 degress after 3 mins of furmark extreme burn-in test in a room of 26 degrees ambient temp (i have undervolted the card to 0.975v), and that's when I lift up the bottom of the laptop by bottles caps.

so, for casual gaming, I wouldn't worry too much about the 7970m's temp and auto shutdowns as it is usually far from 87 degrees in the above "setup", but if I want to overclock the card, it reaches 87 degrees easily which means a lots of auto shutdowns.

btw, glad to know if i'm the first to put a 7970m in m17x r2, but looks like this is a problem will be stuck forever...

the fan control doesn't work correctly, at least for my dell 7970m, i have to use hwinfo64 to manually configure the fan control settings, which means you have to open click the fan control interface in hwinfo64 every time the system boots up, and i don't like that very much...

.....fan controll is a pain, we will see how Eurocom version 7970 manages to controll the fans, i got an answer from eurocom that they managed to work on eprom of 7970m and fans are working ok in m18x r1, they are expecting same results in all alienware models.....i hope...they are not wrong :D

emm?? why you are oc'ing this beast ?? not good enough on stock ? :D

that's a good news, i hope it will turn out working. :)

the reason why that I want to overclock it is because if I undervolt the card to 0.975v, and lift the bottom of the laptop up in a cool ambient temp environement, e.g. 26 degrees, there is a lots of rooms for overclocking, and once I've done that, I really don't want to go back to stock.

but of course, the card itself is fine, and I really like the stock performance boost from 5870m, but if I put the laptop flat on my table with hot ambient temp e.g. around 32 to 38 degress, the 7970m reaches 87 degrees easily, and it is even worse when overlocked, and this is really really bothering. :(

If you have HWiNFO set to startup minimised with windows boot, you can also have the fan control window set to start up minimised so you don't need to manually click the fan control every time

    >>> edit the "HWiNFO64.ini" located at "C:\Program Files\HWiNFO64"

    >>> simply add the line "OpenFanCtrlMin=1" under the settings header.

    All credit to OP here.

I've been away from these awesome forums for a lil while and I expected to come back and see loadsa fellow R2 brothers running about with the 7970M - supply issue?

thanks mate, it seems working after adding this lind of command in the .ini file.

I'm not sure, maybe it's supply issue, or maybe it could just be that more and more people are getiing new generation systems?
