Hi all. I am really pissed off on alienware software that prevents from GPU oc....yes we make laptops with special CPU OC MODS build in but we are retarded and blocked GPU OC.

First off - ati tool is not working for me, when i increase gpu clock for 1mhz system freezes and lcd sw off so i have to force sw off via pwr button.

installed newest 11.8 drivers OVER dell ones didnt show up ati overdrive option in CCC

i have opened bios in rbe and i got this message.....below

maybe i am noob and there is a guide how to do this, but i didnt find it...

    Help me plz

Sapphire TRIXX would be a perfect choice for you , because the HD5870M is very OC-Friendly , it would enable you not only to increase the clock , but also the voltage to get the maximum stable clock without touching the Vbios , ew , scary

trixx caused my lcd to sw off if i even changed clocks 2 mhz up, yes, very OC friendly but not in m17x r2.
I start to miss my MSI GX740 as there i had Ati Overdrive in CCC and P2600 in 3d mark 11 was no problem.
    Now i stucked with stock 5870 and 2000 in 3dmark 11

Alienware SHAME ON YOU - SHAME ON YOU - SHAME ON YOU

ATI Overdrive, I've never used it. I overclocked my 5870 XF cards in the R2 to 1010mhz core and 1310mhz memory.

sorry to hijack this topic, but I want to ask if the 240W power supply is safe to OC the CPU + 5870m in crossfire?

I would love to overclock the core from 700mhz to 800mhz but I don't know if the PSU can handle it. I already use setfsb to get my core i5 to 3.2-3.5ghz turbo boosted, although it's in stock voltage.

If I leave cpu/gpu at its stock voltage and then overclock, will it still draw more maximum power than stock? Thanks

yeah it's enough for 920xm/940xm on 4Ghz and 1000/1300 on two gpus, so it's more than enough with yours

@flingin: it doesn't matter when 5870m does not natively support overdrive, so drop it and edit your vbios without any problems!

Maybe this will help. I didn't write it, but its the same process I follow.

How to create a bootable USB drive guide.

If that doesn't help or if you don't want to flash your vbios, than follow this guide.
How to overclock AMD 4870M/5870M/6970M Graphics Cards Using Sapphire Trixx

Flashing means you won't have to OC your cards each time you restart the system. It's permanant till you flash the cards to stock clocks again.

And yes, the 240W adaptor is adequate as long as you don't get too carried away. Thats my current issue with 6990s and the overclocks I want to achieve. The 240w isn't enough. Or rather the bios throttles the power consumption when I hang it around 280w+ for a period of time.

With a 520M it will be fine. I'm pushing the XM CPU past 100W. You can't do that with a 520M.

^ this is exactly the guide i've followed the first time. Since then i've flashed my cards a lot of time without any problem

Ok so vbios flash FTW then. (but repaste first)
What settings do you prefer, i dont want to run it more than 1.1v...But 1000MHz LOL.

    1000Mhz will require 1.15v am i right ?

Anyway, i am really anoyed when gpu fan kicks in when gpu temp is reaching 80'C+, i usually play at night and i dont want to wake up my girlfriend with a hairdryer :D

So what are maximum clocks and VDC to not exceed temps when 'turbo' kicks in on the gpu fan ?
(considering i will use MX-4 on gpu core and 5-7w/mk 1mm thick thermal pads on the memory chips) ???

    what say you for 1.1v 850/1100 ? will it be <80'C ??

    Cheers

You won't actually be able to hit 1000MHz on the core, what you can hit will be around 850-915 stable, you'll have to test it on your own and play with the core/mem clocks.

The highest you can go on the voltate is 1.15v. You'll have to type in the 1.15v in the 3D clocks settings with RBE. That should enable you to go over 900MHz, though can't comment on gaming stability.

Here is the work it took to push the GPU core past 1GHz, for me.

    My first run at 1GHz

    Top 5870's Vantage Score

Can't really comment on temps, but if your temps are 80*C+ with stock 1.05v, you can bet they will be higher if you increase the voltage and clock rates.
