    Hi,
I have a 17xr2 with an SSD. It's a nice laptop but one thing that I find really annoying is the fan. All that has to happen is for one core to creep up just a little bit and the noisy fan kicks in - this is when doing simple things like web browsing or looking through photos. The i7 processor should be able to do this in its sleep.

So I want to avoid this so the laptop behaves like my previous core2 laptops ie it is quiet unless it is doing something that is maxing everything out.

Can I underclock it? I would rather take a performance hit than listen to that f*#%ing fan anymore.

    Thanks for any help.

Disable turbo in the bios, if you have any voltage increased in the bios, set it to default. What are your system specs? Some CPUs run hotter than others. Turn off any bios OC if you have an XM CPU.

There is no need to underclock your R2. Make sure there is no dust in the vents. Blow it out using compressed air can, wipe the grills. Check your temps using HWinfo. If there is no dust, and the CPU still gets hot, consider a repaste job

It's an i7 Q740 1.73ghz. Have now disabled Turbo in the bios - don't know how I missed it when I was looking before! Voltage is default at 1.5v. Have also cleaned out vents. Will see how that goes with hwinfo - thanks for the advice!

Just use Throttlestop to do that. Then if you want power, you don't need to reboot.
