I have this exact same problem. Had it before i did a reinstall of the OS, and still have it now. For some reason I can only do windows updates to a certain point. After that it'll just show the progress bar and won't actually install anything, SP1 included. So I just turned my updates off. fyi, my windows 7 is legit.

I think its best to leave windows update off before having installed all the drivers.

Well it seems that something alienware related has prevented its install. Now on a fresh install (using the alienware 7 disc) all is well.

I have a sneaking suspension that its the control center thing.

I used the alien win7 disc as well, but still got the problem. I just don't worry about it. Windows updates always seem to fix one thing and screw up another.
