Hello folks I got a chance to give some more power to my old m17x r2. I got a GTX 880m from a buddy of mine. Today installed it on my m17x r2 and was really happy to see that alien head pop up on boot screen: it made me so happy.
I still don't have a proper heatsink to test it further. Can't wait to receive it.

I do also have my 6gb GTX 970m card to test it with updated bios with legacy support.

Hook me up with the bios. I have 980m to test in my m17x r2. I will test R9 m290x later today when I get home.

So modified bios will help if you can share so I can test new gpus.

M290X works great in M17x R2, only issue is that it doesnt have native fan control :/

Would love to see if CF will work tho :D

Got the heatsink today, ok before I install Windows I want to know about this:
Once I restart the screen goes blank and stays like that.
I have to reset bios each time.
May be its related to sound card issue ?

Do you have 16gb ram? I've seen this happen only when gpu was not fully compatibile or if the laptop had 16gb ram.

No I don't, I did this: reset bios and then disabled HD sound and then save/reboot but still the black screen.
But laptop would react to my commands like: ctrl + alt + del : restarts the laptop.

    Anything else I should try?
I know for sure this is bios related, can't wait to get my hands on a modified bios.

Btw: your heatsink was perfect, thanks :)

It looks like it won't happen as the secondary HS is in the way of the R9-m290x CF connector. The way the connector is made, it protrude towards the heat sink. The only way is to cut a piece of the copper off where the secondary CF connector is. I'm not going to do that lol. If someone has a spare secondary heat sink , i'll be glad to mod it and install the CF cable.

What happens if you never restart the system, always just shutdown and then start up normally?

    Lol I was mesmerised :D.
Previous day I got my GTX 880m and the next day the heatsink, wow what a timing mind you both were shipped a week apart.

    I'm thinking of moding a m18x r1 heatsink on m17x r2 for this I need a extra primary heatsink.
Last time I did it with high temp and messed up the heatsink so this time will try it with caution.

No didn't try it though, but I guess we would expect similar results until we mod the bios.
lol can't wait for his return :D.

    Hey Everyone,
I'm so sorry that I've been gone for so long. I was out of the country, got sick, couldn't get back into US cause of infection, had to wait for infection to get better, got back a little bit ago, and picked up Pneumonia... UGH! Anyway, I'm FINALY back and apologize for the delay in responding to all of you. HOWEVER, I plan on getting back to modding the bios's, assuming ya'll are willing to test (those that said they could), tomorrow! If you are willing to test, shoot me a PM and I should have things for ya. I believe, if memory serves, I was working on almost all of the m17xRx systems. (Or almost all of them, there may have been 1 I didn't do anything with, yet). In any case, I hope to hear back from ya'll!
    Thanks,
    Swick
PS. Again, sorry for the delay in responding and getting back. it's been CRAZY!
