hey guys,
ive been having some strange issues with the 680m i recently installed in my m17x r3, i have the 4gb kepler ver.(ordered from eurocom) using modded bios A10 unlocked (SATA fix).
im using nvidia drivers ver. 302.71 that i got from eurocom, I modded it with my device hardware ID:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028
there were multiple ones though:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_0300
( dunno if i did this correctly, but i did it to the best of my ability, i change one of the existing 680m device ids into my own in the inf file, so drivers could install.
I tested 3d mark 11 trial, basic benchmarks, and my scores were:
SCORE
P4322 3DMarks
GRAPHICS SCORE
6559
PHYSICS SCORE
2263
COMBINED SCORE
1972
(this is with overclock via afterburner with IGP turned off in bios)
afterburner :
+125 core clock mhz
+700 memory clock mhz
thats pretty low with overclock, compared to everyone elses score.
, which is hitting 5600 or more....
battlefield 3 runs great, at maxed out 1080p im getting 35-40fps,
but i loose fps during qte sequences in the game, dunno why though
crysis 2 runs strange, its like it wants to run at 40 fps, but when i move the camera side to side in full motion, or run, it staggars on and off in a strange way.
anyways, if you guys have any advice , please feel free to assist, lol
im not used to overclocking and all that jazz, and i didnt do anything to extreme, like over volt, although my voltage to gpu is 0.8370
thanks to you all

2263 in physics score. Holy crap your CPU sucks. Something is wrong with it. Your physics score should be 7000+. That may be the reason why you don`t score as much with the GPU
-
Unless I am mistaken, you will not have GPU boost. That's reserved for the A05 fix of the M17x R4 BIOS.
HOWEVER, we are trying to get this fixed. Look here.
I'd like to thank you for investing in a 680M - it allows the rest of us to see how the machine would react with one.
EDIT:
Quick question, would you happen to have access to any 120HZ equipment to test 3D things? -
yeah, i know, thanks alot for the help BlakeE450--i left my comments on that last week to support your cause, as i would love to get the 3d working with the 680m....ill keep praying, thanks
i dont really have a 120hz equipment but i do have a 120hz 3d monitor on my r3. -
http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3873863
2630QM scored 6131 in Physics score, which is a pure CPU benchmark.
Those temperatures you see are fine although 89C is a getting a bit to near the "too hot" zone. Your CPU could be throttling. Keep an eye on your CPU clocks while running the 3DMark11 to see if it throttles down the clocks -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Edit: I got a physics score of 5767 with my cpu(2630qm) and my 460m. Never did a run with my 6990m. Your score should be higher than that due to the more powerful GPU. -
thanks, i will test again and check my cpu heatsink for proper airflow...also is there a way to stop or cut down on cpu throttle, say, through bios or third party apps?
-
Throttlestop

But the software might increase your CPU temp even more. You need to clean out your notebook or repaste like tonyman says if your CPU reach 90C now. -
yeah, because right now my cpu cores are at 79-80c per core??
I dont think thats normal is it? :0 -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Is that temps at full load or at idle? When I was folding(CPU use at 100%) I usually hit 80C.
-
I have so I C diamond leftover so i could do a repaste....... -
LOL your CPU is idling at 80C? Yeah something isn`t right
Go crazy with dustoff, repaste and then check the temperatures again -
-
Hi guys, good news,
looks like that was the problem! i recleaned and repasted my gpu with ic diamond, when i check the heatsink vents, it was completely cover with thick dust! I cleaned it and reinstalled and now my cpu is at 50c idle!
check out the new 3d mark score:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P5495 3DMarks
thanks alot guys for the help! ill be posting more info for benches later, i have to retest crysis 2
hey guys, also,
is there no way to overclock the 680m with A10 unlocked bios? you guys know any ways to overclock it?
i just ran crysis 2 at 40-45 fps at gpu 62-64c cpu 58-60c so that checks out wonderfully, this definately answers the question of whether the 680m runs good on the r3
now if we can just get 3d working............ -
I'm glad you have come to a pretty speedy solution to your temperature problem. The one I had with my GPU initially took MONTHS.
Please help spread the word about this link.
Another part of that link is getting Dell/AW to add support for the "GPU Boost Technology" new with the Kepler architecture to the M17x r3 BIOS like they have done recently with the M17x r4 with the A05 BIOS. -

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
glad you got it fixed
-
updated 3d mark 11 benchmark using msi afterburner OCing +700 memory clock mhz, +125 core clock mhz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor,Alienware M17xR3 score: P6185 3DMarks
will keep tweaking..... -
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TESTING THIS OUT!!!
Really, there's no other way to express the volume of my gratitude without all caps! Any (good) news on the 3D yet? And how much did the 680M cost? -
-
Well, I'm eagerly awaiting to read about any progress you make on the 3D features. As you must already know, the 3D doesn't work with the 680M and that's one of the only things that's stopping me from getting one.
