Hey guys pretty new to pc gaming I recenmtly got an alien ware m17x r3 with a gtx 580m.
What is throttling on it exactly? Does it affect my gaming at all? I use Msi after burner to over clock my gpu a little bit but I haven't had any issues. Is there a way to disable it?

If you haven't had any issues, there is no reason to do anything.

Throttling is when you are playing a game and the GPU just downclocks to lower speeds, you will see your frame rate drop etc. The M17x R3 has two levels, one at around 63C that some people suffer from, it looks like you don't. Another is a more aggressive throttle when your GPU hits 77/78C. If you don't get any of these, it means that you aren't one of the people that suffers from the 63C throttle and your GPU never reaches 77C. For your uses, I think you will be fine.

No need for another GTX 580M throttling thread. Closed this one down.
