hi guys, i got an LCD screen replacement on last friday, and the screen does not feel the same. the screen is not as bright and clear as the one i had before, and it has a slight yellowish tint (when i look at a white page it does not look like clear white). not only that but the alienhead lighting on the back of the cover is different from the original. it used to have little white led bulbs that create a "compounded eye" effect (like an insect) in the eyes, but now its just a flat white filter with (slightly yellowish) lighting. also the lighting turns off when i close the lid even if i put the options to "on". does anyone else have an m17x r3 with the "compounded eye" alienhead on their cover? because when i asked the service center, they said that they sent the exact same screen and the models they have all do not have the "compounded eye", even the latest ones. i think they sent me a crappy version of the original. i bought mine last month btw.

    which one is yours?

if you download HWinfo, you can see the exact screen model and manufacturer like the picture below. My alienware head is just the standard white one btw and my screen got replaced a few weeks ago. :)

hmm... the problem is i didn't see the model before the change, but i'm pretty damn sure its not the same one as before. i just checked mine and its manufactured this year. AU Optronics B173HW01 V5. i should have done this before i guess..

btw yours looks like it was manufactured last year? is that the replaced one?

yes this is my new one and it seems a lot more vibrant than the old one. Its a long long story, but I actually got another one coming from dell in the mail(prob another 900p panel). I'll see what they send me and report back. Hopefully it will arrive tomarrow.

    got mine here
    HWiNFO64 Download

Edit: yes! yes! that's exactly what my alienhead was before the replacement! thats weird though, the manufacturer and manufacture date is the same as tony's replacement, but his is just flat white.
hmmm.... i guess the replacement parts are all like that?

thanks that would be a great help. i might just return the whole system for a new one if i can't get this issue right. i'm barely eligible. it's not just because of the alienhead, but the clearness of the screen is also underquality.

Actually can you check something for us? Can you see if the light on the Alien Head still lights up white when you close the lid of your laptop while you have the close lid set to do nothing? I have a feeling it is due to a problem stated earlier in this sub-forum regarding a missing dedicated Alien Head LED Lighting Module not installed. Compounded Eyes mean the Module is installed and the Head should light up even when the lid is shut on the laptop and the laptop is still running without it set to close lid = standby or something. Lack of compound eyes units will see the Head not light up when closing the lid.

no, the led turns off when i close the lid even if "the close lid [is] set to do nothing". that was also an issue. which means its tied to the backlight.

Call Dell and ask for the LED Module then per that thread's recommendations. I think neither of you has one installed on the laptop.

It should be the missing part. As for the LED Module that foes on the lid. However if they want to do a complete exchange, that is even better in my books.

i'm probably going to do a complete exchange because it's not just about the alienhead, but the lcd screen is not as good as before. since the guys at the service center have no clue what i'm talking about, i guess its the only way...

lol, now they're saying that i might not be able to get a complete replacement because it's over 21 days even if i reported tech issues within the date. after being transferred to multiple departments i found one tech woman who would help me out and send a cancellation request to higher authority.

i guess if i this doesn't go through i'll have to somehow convince tech support to send another LCD replacement with an independent alienhead lighting like the one i had before -_-

thanks, i drew the pic myself :D

looks like LG Philips is what it originally was. my replacement is AU Optronics B173HW01 V5 which seems to be a cheap replacement, with dimmer lighting and yellow tint.

The problem here is the Alienhead does not have independent lighting. The only lighting is the residual backlight from the LCD. That is why when closing the lid, the Alienhead turns off too when it shouldn't. To explain to Dell, just tell them that you have a friend with the same laptop and you can tell that his has dedicated lighting and yours doesn't. I'll post piccys for you tomorrow if you really want.

yes, exactly. i tried dimming the screen brightness and noticed that the alienhead also dimmed. on top of that, since the lcd screen is yellowish, the alienhead is also yellow.

i'm gonna have to replace both and make sure the dedicated lighting is on the lcd board. in fact i'm going to show him this very thread to convince him. but nah, i think Crash85's piccy will do. thanks anyways :)

Here is a thread with the discussion concerning the missing LED. The reason the alien has a yellowish tint is because it's now lit by your LCD backlight, which you discribed as yellowish. Hence the yellowish eyes. I included an email below of the Dell India rep that was working the issue. Not sure what the final outcome was.

AlienHead LED works OK? Or only work with a screen light? (Only M17xR3)
