    Hi all,

My m17x r3 is collecting dust ever since it's gpu (6990m) got fried. Now I'm thinking of repairing it, add 16GB ram and ssd I have lying around, and putting it on sale, I think it still can get 700 - 1000 euro for it??

But now my question, which gpu should I put in there, balancing price and what I would get out of it after selling it? Most ideally I would be able to use retail drivers, and not a modded version that would blow up in someones face if accidently updated.

I saw older threads having good experience with the 7970m (200-250 euros) or should I just get the same 6990m (150 euros)? Or are there other options? What else do I need? I've read I could reuse the thermal padding, so only thing I need to get is the card and some pastecleaning and paste?

Go for a GTX780M if you can afford it...

I've been quite pleased with the performance gain going from a 6990m to the 7970m. Makes most games that were previously out of reach perform quite well with high to very high image quality specs. I was able to find a new 7970m on ebay for 300 usd.

780m is good choice. I suggest to use new thermal pads.
