Hey, dell is sending me a warranty replcement for my m1730, and it's an m17x. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify some of the parts on my new laptop as the configuration page is currently undecipherable to me other than the hard drive and the screen. Thanks in advance

it is the m17x r1 but still a very nice upgrade from what you have i say you did good..if for any reason you have any issues with the replacement other members in the same instance after couple R1 replacements they eventually got R2 so you have no worries it will only get better -
well this is my 4th computer from dell. i started with an inspiron e1505, went to a dell xps m1710, then to a dell xps m1730, then to this alienware m17x, lol. they've been treating me pretty well.
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
-
thanks, i appreciate it. I assume my resolution will go up to 1920x1200, cuz that's what i'm able to sport right now, so i'd be fairly upset if it was downgraded, but i could just argue with them again and then have them send me a new 5th laptop. haha.
how does the TV tuner work? does that mean i can just watch live television on my laptop?
-
Hey great set! And your VERY lucky to get a m17x.
However, I would suggest you try and get the r2, even if they give u 4870's! -
-
LEt them know you heard about a lot of the problems, and you'd like to know if they could kindly send the R2 instead with core-i. Also emphasize that you've always had a great experience with dell. Let them know that you appreciate all that they've done with you. Believe it or not, a great attitude goes farther then almost anything, well except cash of course
I definately recommend at least trying for the R2, whats the worst that could happen? -
I would push for WUXGA.
-
Agreed, if you had a 1900x1200 screen or 1900x1080, push for the RGB LED of the R2, it's an amazing screen.
-
Alright, so i got it in the mail today. Sad to see it's only 900p, even my XPS had 1200p, so kinda upset about that. My customer service dude said he's going to call me tomorrow to ask me about it, and he's like the top level CSR, so i'll talk to him about how the screen seems like more of a downgrade than an upgrade, see if i can get anything out of him. I appreciate all the help guys
Also just realized my laptop stopped charging, dell is gonna give me my r2 or they shall pay! lulz33 days left of warranty ftw. haha
Called up dell, got your tech team, which i dont pay for...they transferred me to XPS...XPS transferred me to alienware, Alienware told me i needed XPS...put me on hold for 30 minutes then got disconnected...called back..got your tech team again..and now transferred to XPS..again..on hold -
Alright, so i pushed for the R2...they said no, but when i have the consumer resolutions dept call me tomorrow i'll talk to them about it, hopefully they can get me the R2, they did offer to replace my LCD and battery though.
-
Screen is the main point here. As long as you end up w/ a RGB WUXGA, you will be happy with the system.
-
well it's worth a try, we're valued dell customers, we have 9 dell PCs. haha.
and even if i cant get the r2 they'll still replace my screen and battery anyways. i never return my replacement parts anyways, i've got like 30 chargers for my XPS. plus i got this battery to work maybe i'll just keep it
-
I had a similar experience as you, except my M1730 was a used one I had bought from someone here on NBR for $600 (excellent deal, I must say with SLI 8700's and WUXGA) for my daughter, a while back.
In any case, there was a couple weeks left on the warranty, and the thing kept overheating when she played WoW. They sent out a tech to replace the complete innards of it (motherboard, SLI video cards, fans, etc.). Still, it would overheat.
Dell then said they'd replace it. I got an email a week later saying they don't have that model any more (the Outlet is full of them, so not sure why they would say that), and that they were going to give me an Alienware M17x in place of it.
Long story short, not only did they send an M17x, they sent a brand-spankin' new, M17xR2 with WUXGA RGBLED, dual 4870's and a Core i7-720 in Nebula Red just like her M1730 was red!
When I told my daughter what she was getting, she was very excited (she is a bit of a geek, too!). I couldn't believe Dell would send me a $2600 notebook in exchange for the almost out of warranty M1730 I had! I had very good luck on that one!
So, hold out hope for getting better. I would definitely DEMAND the RGBLED 1920x1200 screen. You had WUXGA, so they need to give you the same resolution screen.
Good luck! -
haha, congrats
they already offered the replacement screen, they kept saying they couldn't give me the r2 because it's a replacement for an inspiron e1505, which was my original laptop that somehow worked it's way up to an alienware m17x, i guess i'm just good like that
I asked to speak to his supervisor and he insisted he WAS the supervisor, so i'm waiting for the guy who actually HAS power to call me tomorrow. They've been really good about this, they gave me overnight shipping and everything.

As far as them offering upgrade, make sure it goes into your service tag for future reference. In my experience, the replacement systems get issued are compared to the service tag specs. If a rep sees no WUXGA on your M17x service tag, you will probably lose out on it or argue/waste time.
-
i started out as a nice 13 year old boy on the phone with them
now i'm a nice 16 (almost 17) year old boy..but i know what i'm talkin about
edit: btw, about the TV tuner, the spec list said it had one, is there supposed to be something that plugs in, is it internal? how do i use it? thanks -
If i was you i would ask for the r2.
I know they do this as i exchanged my xps1710 for the r2. I pay a few more ££ on upgrades like 820qm, 4870 crossfire, rgb led and 2years warrenty. BUT WAS WELL WORTH it
I cant belive they only offering a r1. -
Another thought, before your warranty expires, extend it for a year. It's worth it. Then when you get the R1, if the DPC latency bothers you, sounds stuttering, ect, Call dell and mention it. After that they might send and R2 your way.
-
i have a question real quick. I went into my device manager to just look around and it says my graphics card is an nvidia geforce 9400, my old laptop had a 9700M GT or something like that, to me 9700 is a higher number than a 9400 ...so i'm just assuming here, but wouldn't a 9700 be better than a 9400? sorry if this sounds dumb in some way/shape/form..but i'm a noob -
Your running in stealth mode. The 9400 is the integrated GPU for power saving.
-
so how do i take it out of stealth mode? haha
Oh look, i just suffered my first BSoD, and none of my FN nor my capacitive touch buttons are working either, this just gets better and better... -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
\
As for the graphics-I always disable mine in the BIOS. Don't need that puny 9400 when you have a 260 or 280 card in there. Turn it off and if you need it, you can go back in and turn it on. Too many problems when I have it enabled-computer is slow, choppy, graphics suck. Just disable and no worries. -
any idea how to use a TV Tuner?
-
Alright ,so the dell agent offered to refund me 1600 dollars of my original e1505 purchase if i put it towards a new dell laptop...sounds like a deal to me, what do you think?
-
How much are R2's in outlet? Do the math first before you take the offer.
-
Well, i was just going to deck out a studio xps 16, which came out to around 1800 bucks minus the 1600, but as a 16 year old kid i unfortunately don't have access to a spare 1600 dollars, i assumed i would just get a dell store credit for 1600 bucks and have to pay the difference, but i have to get the refunded 1600 dollars (which takes 5-7 days) and have to pay for the computer upfront, which i can't afford to do. The person also refused to give me an R2, and is instead just sending me another replacement with the better screen.
-
I'd take the R1 w/ WUXGA. That's just me though.
-
well it's my only choice at this point. haha
so that's what i'm getting. i appreciate all the help guys
Btw, i realize this may be somewhere else, if someone could point me to where it might be located:
the trackpad on this laptop just flat out SUCKS, is there any way to improve it? -
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Me too! Plus, you might get some upgrades you don't expect. And, it's waaaaaaay better than a studio.
-
Any word on the TV Tuner thing? -
My guess is it was a USB tv tuner that was included on the service tag.
You made it sound like you were choosing refund. So they are issuing another M17 replacement? -
i was gonna get a refund but then the guy told me i couldn't just use it as a dell credit, i'd have to get the money refunded and buy a new one on the stop, and being 16 years old, i dont have 18-1900 dollars in my checking or Money Market Account, not even put together. haha, so they're sending me a new m17x (r1
) but it's gonna have the RGB LCD, and it's still an upgrade from my XPS system and hm, i didn't get a usb TV tuner in the box
what a rip off
-
A rip off after going from an e1505 all the way to a new m17x? That's far from a rip off in my right mind.
Are you exactly looking into fixing your system(or getting a working system) or gold digging?
This forum is nuts, imo. I can't tell if the purpose of this forum is to work out issues or simply to scam Dell for a better, more expensive system. -
Well if you had experiences with dell i've had you'd want to screw em as well. The sales rep i spoke with for my e1505 sold me 4 or 5 accessories that weren't even compatible with my laptop, and then when i got the laptop, it itself didn't even work, so dell sent me my XPS m1730, and after numerous motherboard, charger, battery, LCD, keyboard, trackpad, sound and graphics card replacements they sent me the xps m1730. Now the xps m1730 (after the same replacements as the m1710) is even more broken now, they sent me this. they're the scam artists. haha
-
I've had worse experience than you and I've not gotten any special treatment from them nor did I ask them to. I only asked for a working system of the same model and that's what I got. I stopped there as I have no reason to pursue them into giving me a brand new Alienware. You need to be grateful they went as far as sending you a brand new m17x and yet you're still unhappy because you couldn't pursue them into giving you a r2? As I've said. Are you looking into getting a stable system replacement or are you simply digging for a more expensive system?
They are not scam artists. They offered you a full refund, but you couldn't accept it. What you're doing/thinking is closer to scamming, imo. -
OP should be grateful. I guess he's too young for that.
-
i am grateful, and it's not a brand new alienware, it's a refurb. The only reason i get these is because the XPS m1710 was discontinued, as was the m1730. The reason they give me "Special treatment" is because we're preferred customers and owners of something like 9 dell computers and they dont want us to leave. the thing i'm not grateful for is when they send me a computer to replace a broken one, and it's broken as well. I'm sorry i'm not as good of a person as you are, but guess what, i pay for my stuff myself, i like to get what i paid for, paid 2000 bucks for my original e1505, of my own money, when i was 13. If you're gonna sit here and just insult me then guess what, just leave me alone. I appreciate the help like i said, no need to insult me. i didn't do anything to you.
-
You are all off. First of all, your age has nothing to do with it. I'm 4 years older than you and I run my own company. I ordered over 10 laptops(new and from outlet) in the past year if that matters. Remember that other people value their money just as you do with yours. Honestly, I don't care about what you receive. I only posted in this nonsense because you are abusing their system by gold digging rather than trying to get a working system.
-
Wow, you're just a cool person. I hope to be as cool as you someday. Meanwhile everyone in this thread who was helping me TOLD me to go for the r2, so don't try to take out the anger due to the fact you live in your mom's basement on me. If this thread is such nonsense why do you keep posting in it? you could have simply scrolled past it the first..second..or third time and not posted a reply. Your comments do nothing except display how much of a lifeless twit you are. I am in fact trying to get a working system, since this one DOES NOT work. Just gtfo already, kthxbai.
-
Too bad this isn't your little playground. I can post here if I want to.
You aren't trying to get a working system. It's obvious you're trying to get a more expensive system by exploiting their weakness. Just read through your own comments before you type. Ever thought of that?
Your parents must be proud to raise you in such a way. I am sure they are very educated. -
can both you ladies get back to the topic on HAND...The op decided to go for a replacement versus a refund which makes sense since they will not let you use that money on a outlet system but on a brand new system which would mean you need to pony up $500-$700 to get a r2.
The story here is the OP will get a replacement R1 that has the correct parts and hopefully a working replacement. If for some reason the replacement does not work out or gives him issues down the road he can call in and get it replaced and hopefully at that time they will offer him an R2 if he still has warranty. If not he still got a very good deal and should be happy. You went from a much lower end model to begin with and over the years have been upgraded due to your inconvienance and results. I think dell has done as much as they can to help you out and continues to help you out. This does not mean you will get a R2 right away but after some time if you keep experiencing issues they might just offer it to you but you should be happy to go from a DELL to ALIENWARE which it self is an upgrade along with the part upgrades they gave you.
thanks -

On that note, thread closed. Posts have been deleted as well.
I also suggest that someone of you guys look into the built in Ignore system(see usercp), if you do not want to read other people's posts.
m17x replacement for XPS M1730
