I think it is a decent deal. You are loosing your extreme processor for a 840qm, but that is still going to be a huge performance hike. Plus you're getting an RGBLED screen i believe. You lost 2gb of ram (no biggy), and got intel 6300wireless and DUAL 5870? or 4870 gpus (which kick the but of your 8800s)

It'll help modernize your system more I suppose.

    That deal is awesome!
You should ask them for an i7 940xm if possible (extreme for extreme), if not that 840qm will still be a lot faster than your old one. I do not think the screen is RGB led though, as it is out of stock (thats why I have the ccfl).

    It'll be a 5870 CF setup as the mobility 4870 are GDDR3.

    Thats a nice deal.
No harm in asking can you get an extreme cpu.
If they refuse, I wouldn't worry about it too much

The R3 is a very nice upgrade, although you're missing out on RGB, and Xfire 5870s. It's still an upgrade from your old unit. And at least it won't be a refurb, which may cause problems down the road.

May I ask how long it took Dell to call you about the replacement? I'm waiting for dell to offer me a replacement for my R2.

See if you can wait a little longer. The M18X has been talked about a lot, and is already available on some Dell websites, so it shouldn't be long for it to be available on the U.S website. That would be a real replacement/upgrade from your R2.

I discussed about the replacement with a supervisor on Saturday, hoping to get a call this week. They told me within 18 days.

It seems unlikely that they would replace a R2 with a m18x, but I can definitely understand where you're coming from. It'll be interesting to see what they do.

If you've got dual 5870s, I think there's a pretty good chance you could go for the M18x. Dell's policy is to replace with something that's at least as good as what you've got. If your old laptop had a pair of top-of-the-line graphics cards, your new laptop should also have a pair of top-of-the-line graphics cards. You can only get that with the M18x.
