Hello all, I have had enough of it!
Checked about everything of this problem, it won't just fix...
Here's the problem:
My m17x-R1 won't read the alienware windows or resource dvd, but will read any other dvd/cd.
It will just state: No disk inserted. (after making funny noises clicking and all - freezing explorer,...) - remember it recognises all other dvds/cds.
And the Alienware dvd runs fine in another pc.
What I have tried so far:
-remove it in DEV MGR and reboot
-remove the upper/lower filter (there were none)
-booting from the dvd didnt work either
-reinstalling/removing/... dvd software like Alcohol120%, Daemon tools, virtualclonedrive (because it might be possible the "tray" wasn't closed because one of these programs.)
What could I do to fix this?
BIG EDIT:
I tried the Alienware resource disk now, it recognises it, but as an "empty" one... giving me the option to: read it like a USB drive OR like a CD/DVD drive (for file transferring etc..)
What to choose?
-
if it runs fine in another pc, why not burn a copy?
-
I tried that, burn another legal W7 and copy the AW W7 dvd, but alas, it seems to have a nack on not reading Windows 7 disks...
I just inserted the Resource dvd and it recognises it as an amtpy dvd, giving me the option to use it as USB or DVD drive.. what to do? -
Is it possibly a media problem? Are you sure the copy you burned was on media compatible with the DVD in the R1? dvd+r vs dvd-r, etc?
-
yep.
If I insert an empty one it works fine. Or any other kind of disk... Just the windows 7 and resource disk wont be read.

How about this: Do you have access to another Win-7 computer? You can make a bootable USB drive for installing your operating system using your Win-7 disk, IF you can get it to read on a different machine. It gets you around the issue, but doesn't actually make your machine read your disk.
I have not done this myself, but I have read numerous sets of instructions on how, and its seems straightforward. You do not need to install any special software on the host machine to make that USB either; it's done completely through the Command Prompt functionality. You can reinstall from a USB drive much faster than you can from the disk as well. Do a search on "USB", "bootable", "Windows 7" together and you will find several sets of instructions.
As far as the so-called resource disk goes, don't use it for your drivers. Use the Dell support site, where you will get the latest ones. And definitely do not use the Command Center from the resource disk, if you get the resource disk going after all. -
Try this it really works well. I have usb flash drives with win 7 for all my systems. If you search the web for legal copies there is more info. Good luck.
