    hi m17x owners!

i am brand spankin new to this forum. i've been looking for an used m17x for a couple weeks (on a tight budget) and finally won one on ebay, but i'm deciding if i should pay for it.. LOL.

    DELL ALIENWARE M17X-R1 LAPTOP 2.80GHZ CORE 2 4.0GB RAM - eBay (item 290485059437 end time Oct-12-10 12:30:56 PDT)

i've been researching around yahoo and google, but this specific m17x-r1 is hard to find reviews and whatnot. and from my research, is this the latest model before alienware merged with dell?

 is this considered a good deal? does it look legit? what should i ask the seller?

    THANKS FOR THE HELP! :D

i have seen the m17x r2 in the outlet as low as $1449 and then you get 20% off on top of that so your price would be $1159 + tax. Yes almost double but a much better investment and it will last much longer along with a solid resale value.

I wouldnt buy it. I mean, the specs are okayish I suppose, but whats the point of buying a laptop which is already borderline outdated? Better up your budget, buy something relatively new (my m15 cost me 900$).

It's EOL. The R2 at least has a chance in hell at supporting newer GPUs as they come out.

    BUT FORREAL... a m17x-r1 with...
    INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME CPU X9000 2.80GHZ
    4.00 GB RAM
    NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3600M 512MB
    300GB HARD DRIVE
    BD-ROM DRIVE
    ...for $651.00

i'm looking around ebay, and every other m17x (even with weaker/less specs) are going for much more.

seriously... is this not worth it?
(and i dont care if it has a dead battery, it turns on when it's plugged through the charger)

It's running a Core 2 and you'll need to buy a new battery? I wouldn't go for this. Yes, a lot of us do buy a new laptop every year. If you are not one of those guys, and do plan on keeping your laptop for some time, that's all the more reason to start yourself out on a newer platform.

Its ultimately up to you chiefs. If you want it just grab it. Other people here can say what they like and just put in their opinions.

I don't think its an R1 though chiefs. It was the one before the R1.

However I do agree if you can save up a little more for a newer model that would be best.
If that was $400 - $500 I would probably almost snap it up LOL!

    Cheers. :)

That is what the data plate says, yes. It is not the current M17x-R2 predecessor though, I promise. It's the older style, like pre M17 old. It's got a Quadro FX3600, so it's pretty old. Wasn't that card only slightly better than the 7900/7950GTX?

That looks like an Area 51 m17 to me, if it is honestly you couldn't pay me to take it let alone me pay $600+ for it. The gpu's in those are literal time bombs, and within 6months to a year you're sitting on a computer next to obsolete for any serious gaming.

Yeh chiefs I have both the R1 and R2. Its not the R1. Seller just has names wrong. Its the previous model before the current gen of M17x. It is the M17 Alienware. Spaceship black type.

    Its an M17 not M17x.

    It should be this one.

i'm on a tight budget and can only afford around that price range. over all in all, comparing the specs on this m17 to other NEW laptops on the market nowadays for around $700, would this be considered worth it?

i picked this m15x for my mother and younger brother (10yrs old) to use and hopefully hang on to for 5+ years and over time upgrade the cpu, gpu and other parts. I would much rather put my money into a solid single gpu solutions than a setup that is 3 generations old and a ticking time bomb. You can blow your money in better ways like a hooker with std's

    soooo....i have a m15x now lolz

I have purchased laptops on a snap decision, and it never works out. You get what you pay for in almost every instance, unless the seller is downright desperate. You'd be buying very obsolete technology. That card will run Crysis at 30fps all settings at MEDIUM at 1440x900. If you want to waste $600, I can give you my address so you can mail me a check. :D

Also, if you aren't in a rush to buy a laptop and don't mind refurbished computers, then check out the Dell Outlet and wait for 20-25% coupons that come out every 2 weeks. It's like clockwork. Many people here have managed to get fantastic deals on laptops that would be otherwise out of their budget. Search for outlet threads and you'll see...

You're going to get negative feedback for this, aren't you? You already "bought" it from Ebay. If you can only afford $700 or so, this is probably the best Alienware 17" laptop you can get for the price. It's a legacy M17, and will run like one. You can at least part out the cpu, etc, for resale, but I'm approaching this as if you've already bought it - because you said you "won" the auction.
You can get a much better laptop for $700 however...

    Don't be a non-paying Ebay bidder, either, that's weak.

Also a good point from Walsh, once you hit bid, you are agreeing to purchase that system for that price. If your just thinking about it, not sure why you would hit bid and ruin a deal and sale for somone else
