hi m17x owners!
i am brand spankin new to this forum. i've been looking for an used m17x for a couple weeks (on a tight budget) and finally won one on ebay, but i'm deciding if i should pay for it.. LOL.
DELL ALIENWARE M17X-R1 LAPTOP 2.80GHZ CORE 2 4.0GB RAM - eBay (item 290485059437 end time Oct-12-10 12:30:56 PDT)
i've been researching around yahoo and google, but this specific m17x-r1 is hard to find reviews and whatnot. and from my research, is this the latest model before alienware merged with dell?
is this considered a good deal? does it look legit? what should i ask the seller?
THANKS FOR THE HELP!![]()

this is the legacy m17x-r1 it's a death system with not upgradability i'm not sure about what it's worth but it's no where as powerfull as the newer ones
-
i have seen the m17x r2 in the outlet as low as $1449 and then you get 20% off on top of that so your price would be $1159 + tax. Yes almost double but a much better investment and it will last much longer along with a solid resale value.
-
but but... how are the specs on that m17x-r1, is it worth the price?
-
no. the battery is dead and they aren't cheap. not a good deal.
-
i hate you necrotopsy. HAHA jk. *BESIDES THE BATTERY* is it a good deal for its specs?
-
I say buy it.
Here's what a used OEM X9000 CPU is selling for on Ebay.
M1730 CPU X9000 Core 2 Extreme 2.8GHz Processor SLAZ3 - eBay (item 370444162881 end time Nov-10-10 08:21:28 PST)
If your laptop doesn't work out, you could part it out for more than what you paid for it.
In case you don't know about the X9000, with the help of ThrottleStop you can increase the CPU multiplier and crank them up to about 3.4GHz to 3.6GHz reliably. Higher than that if you get a good one. -
I wouldnt buy it. I mean, the specs are okayish I suppose, but whats the point of buying a laptop which is already borderline outdated? Better up your budget, buy something relatively new (my m15 cost me 900$).
-
THANKS for the replies. i will research more about cracking up the x9000 cpu, thanks unclewebb.
hey, this one has a blu-ray player, AND more ram than yours. wassup?! HAHA -
It's EOL. The R2 at least has a chance in hell at supporting newer GPUs as they come out.
-
BUT FORREAL... a m17x-r1 with...
INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME CPU X9000 2.80GHZ
4.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3600M 512MB
300GB HARD DRIVE
BD-ROM DRIVE
...for $651.00
i'm looking around ebay, and every other m17x (even with weaker/less specs) are going for much more.
seriously... is this not worth it?
(and i dont care if it has a dead battery, it turns on when it's plugged through the charger) -

It's running a Core 2 and you'll need to buy a new battery? I wouldn't go for this. Yes, a lot of us do buy a new laptop every year. If you are not one of those guys, and do plan on keeping your laptop for some time, that's all the more reason to start yourself out on a newer platform.
-
I don't think its an R1 though chiefs. It was the one before the R1.
However I do agree if you can save up a little more for a newer model that would be best.
If that was $400 - $500 I would probably almost snap it up LOL!
Cheers. -
I wouldn't buy it. Get a refurb from the Dell outlet for 20% off (my system was 1100 shipped)
-
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
That's not the R1 you think it is. That thing looks like 3+ generations ago. I hope you weren't the winning bidder.
-
the picture shows that its an 'ALIENWARE CORP M17X-R1' -
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
That is what the data plate says, yes. It is not the current M17x-R2 predecessor though, I promise. It's the older style, like pre M17 old. It's got a Quadro FX3600, so it's pretty old. Wasn't that card only slightly better than the 7900/7950GTX?

That looks like an Area 51 m17 to me, if it is honestly you couldn't pay me to take it let alone me pay $600+ for it. The gpu's in those are literal time bombs, and within 6months to a year you're sitting on a computer next to obsolete for any serious gaming.
-
Its an M17 not M17x.
It should be this one.

Just saw the last pic on the ebay thing though. Interesting.
Cheers. -
i'm on a tight budget and can only afford around that price range. over all in all, comparing the specs on this m17 to other NEW laptops on the market nowadays for around $700, would this be considered worth it?
-
i picked this m15x for my mother and younger brother (10yrs old) to use and hopefully hang on to for 5+ years and over time upgrade the cpu, gpu and other parts. I would much rather put my money into a solid single gpu solutions than a setup that is 3 generations old and a ticking time bomb. You can blow your money in better ways like a hooker with std's
soooo....i have a m15x now lolz

*SIGH* reading around the forum, i REALLYYYY want a RGB LED laptop!!!

TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
I have purchased laptops on a snap decision, and it never works out. You get what you pay for in almost every instance, unless the seller is downright desperate. You'd be buying very obsolete technology. That card will run Crysis at 30fps all settings at MEDIUM at 1440x900. If you want to waste $600, I can give you my address so you can mail me a check.

i hate you turbodtalon!

We're all here to help Thizz. Save up some more bucks and get yourself a kick butt system!
-
Agreed with TurboT, If you want to really be happy, continue saving your money till you can get what you really want. RGB screen is enough to hold out for. Also see the link in my sig for info to save money, when the time comes it might be useful
-
Also, if you aren't in a rush to buy a laptop and don't mind refurbished computers, then check out the Dell Outlet and wait for 20-25% coupons that come out every 2 weeks. It's like clockwork. Many people here have managed to get fantastic deals on laptops that would be otherwise out of their budget. Search for outlet threads and you'll see...
-
You can get a much better laptop for $700 however...
Don't be a non-paying Ebay bidder, either, that's weak. -
Also a good point from Walsh, once you hit bid, you are agreeing to purchase that system for that price. If your just thinking about it, not sure why you would hit bid and ruin a deal and sale for somone else
m17x-r1: is this a steal!?
