Hey guys, I'm looking at doing downrange again here VERY shortly and while my wife has strictly prohibited me from taking my gaming monster with me I would like to know if any fellow military members or civ contractors have taken there r2's with them and any troubles they ran into? I already have dust stuck under the display so I know that will be an issue. My wife was so set on my NOT taking it she got me the MBA in my sig. I figured I would get a pelican case for protection but what about dust control? On my last deployment with an old laptop I fabricated a small MicroFiber filter system for the fans, similar to the same filters I use on all my military networking systems. Please any help would be nice... btw sry I've jumped to mac but my wife really doesn't want a 5500 dollar system trashed.

I can't speak specifically for the R2 but I can say that from my experiences with gaming laptops in both Iraq and Afghanistan(currently deployed), if you don't open it up and give it a good cleaning at least bi monthly, you'll probably have problems. Where ya headed, btw?

This. I commented the same on your MBA post... The filters can help, but this machine is made for high end performance, and restrictive airflow will not only heat up your machine, but cause undo stress on the fan bearings. Hope you still have the dell warranty!

I can't officially say just yet, but it's not Iraq or Afghan this time so i'm happy about that. But I am heading to the middle east still so I've heard sand is a real problem there. In Afghan sand wasn't a problem, very fine dirt we call moondust, picture in your head brown powered sugar and you are RIGHT. I just set my r2 up with the microfiber cloth filters and while I have done this many times before on HP's and Dell's, it was a very bad idea on my r2. The temps at idle were 62c and while gaming my graphics jumped over 100c! With a room temp of 72 that easily means my r2 isn't coming with me :( But thank you for your replies.

I'm not so much worried about myself as I am my soldiers. Soldiers first, then me. But I'm sure I'll come back fine as well.

Get a passive cooling block... the active ones will just throw more sand around :)

Hey Len make sure when you deploy you post back on here to say how it works out if you bring your M17x. I'll be deploying next winter and would love to know how it works out for you so I know if I can expect any problems.

Thanks. I knew about the passive cooling pad because I tried an active fan last deployment and it pushed dust around. I had an hp dv7 and the cooling fan blew right into the intake fan of my lappy, at first I thought this was great... about 3 days later I threw it out as it trashed my fan. Ended up cutting the grill off the fan so when it go stuck I could spin in by hand lol. My wife forced me to pack up my m17x, so sry guys it's not going. Anyone knows that if the wife isn't happy, no one is. So I'll just pack it away and open it back up when I get back. It'll be like the day I got it all over again :p
