I am so unbelievably happy. I sold my desktop expecting them soon.. they never came.. Managed to push my buyer back until tomorrow when I ship it.

Now I can order and ship this thing off tomorrow.. I'll be without a computer for however long it takes to get to me but its better than waiting weeks upon weeks! 2 Week wait time isn't going to kill me :)

Probably there are still a few parts to build a few last systems.
I think that's that we shouldn't make a mile long thread about this..

    cheers to everybody

*sigh* I guess Clevo now has a monopoly on CF/SLI laptops. This is unfortunate.

All good things must come to an end. RIP R2, sorely missed - not be my tho cos I have one! hehehe.

Not to start another R2 vs R3 Debate but if Dell have stopped producing the R2, it does, atm, hand over the gaming laptop throne to other manufacturers as Dell no longer sell a dual gpu laptop.

That is a terrible shame, and a backwards step in my book. And, again, not to start rumour mongering, unless they do release a dual gpu laptop like the hypothetical M18x....well, I can see ALOT of people jumping ship BIG TIME. :(

Speaking as someone who has owned two generations of multi GPU setups (Crossfire 5870s in my desktop then SLI 580s) I can honestly say it REALLY isn't worth it.

For me at least its too much power, The crossfire 5870s also had more problems than the performance was worth... ATIAMD Drivers were bad.

@ stevie: That's a given for me. I'm going to be forced to buy a Clevo next time I'm in the market for a gaming laptop unless The M18x turns into reality.

This from the DELL Rep i spoke to:

"Alienware M17X is temporarily discontinued because of the website maintenance and will be up and running in next 2 hrs"

    "The r2 will be available?"

    "oh yes"

Sorta conflicts with "No longer available to purchase online" from the site.

Anyway, see what a couiple of hours brings..........

....I know there is a difference, That still doesn't change the fact that many games don't support multi-GPU setups and AMD drivers for their crossfire are absolute trash.

I'm not much into gaming anymore but AFAIK, current games benefit pretty well from dual GPUs. I'm talking about BC2, Mafia 2, AC2, ME2 etc...

And I also have no problem playing those games using 10.8 or 11.2. They run perfectly well and the difference between XFX enabled and not is massive. And actually single 5870M does not have enough horsepower to provide smooth gameplay in most current games at high/highest settings.

And even for no reason at all, I believe still so many AW users here ask for dual GPU config ;)

Edit: And I know you know they are difference. I by no mean try to offense or anything. I was typing on my phone so I just wanted to make my post short. Sorry!

Back to the topic, I think if R2 is discontinued then M18x w/ dual GPU is coming :D

Not to get a speculation war going here, but it seems pretty clear to me.
    m17x r3 is m15x replacement, m18(or 19 w/e) is r2 replacement.

pity though, dell is handing over the 17in title to clevo. Even if there were issues with CF, some people just bought because they wanted the biggest and baddest and best.

Alienware has something up their sleeve. This has happened before. They quit offering the M17, and then the M17x suddenly appeared on the website.

I'm running dual Radeon 4890s in my desktop and I've never had a single problem with crossfire in a game. I wonder if the xfire setup in the laptops is more prone to problems because the drivers are customized by dell?

Given recent advancements in GPU technology vs. actual required horsepower for the majority of games at 1080p resolution, dual GPUs aren't quite a necessity...assuming the 6960M is going to be offered in the R3.

But, if there is a niche, Alienware needs to fill it, or someone else will. There will always be a customer for the bleeding edge massive dual-gpu laptop. They will always be willing to pay top dollar to have the biggest, best, and fastest, even if the need isn't there. Nobody actually needs to climb the tallest mountain in the world, but people always will, just to have done it.

While I've typically been the guy who had to have the nicest stuff right when it debuted, that is over for me. From now on I will wait until they start hitting the Dell Outlet, and then upgrade everything with aftermarket parts. It just gets outdated too quickly to pay $4k+ for it.

not everybody needs r3, remember, its only single gpu and no rgbled :)
and I bet r3 is not something they took out r2 for... the primary reason is they ran out of supplies long time ago. that same RGBLED is like 1 week in demand in certain countries

what he said. And by the way for those claiming that amd driver are trash and "many games" doesn't support CF/SLI, go learn how to setup and tweak your machine.

Hmmm..come on boys....relaxx.....everyone has made their point valid and clear. From the various threads I have seen, there has been a consistent issue with SLI or Crossfire. Some work and some dont. Bottom line for a good piece of technology is consistency and ability to scale to a good extent in the future. In terms of single GPU R3, I think it pretty much makes up for Dual card 5870 even if its behind by about 10 percent.

I have a crossfire myself. But what do I use it for? Only games. I wish I cud use it more for rendering etc. But thats not happening. I also choose alienware to do work because it doubles as a entertainment point for me too.

If I'm going to be civil (lol :p) and complain about the r3 my major complaint is that it doesn't have a 485m.

460 seems too weak but I hate ATIAMD drivers, I also wanted to use "flawless" 3D but it seems like the 460 is too weak for that as well. I know the 6970 will run 3D but I highly doubt it'll work with the included 3D glasses.

Just got off the phone with Dell (i'm in Canada) and apparently the m17x is only being taken down for a week or two as they're getting in too many orders and there aren't enough supplies. He said that the "Lead Time" for the processors is really long.

    No m18x in sight...

Yeah, I call B.S.. If they're getting too many orders for a particular component they'd slap a "may delay delivery of system" nearby, they wouldn't take the entire system down. That's just silly.

There are many reasons why they might have taken them down, but I still can't see a good reason why they don't have a "please be patient, awesome things in the works" placeholder or something (anything!) up instead.

This JUST In: Dell has no company communication WHATSOEVER and the people paid to bring in the money (Sales reps) are completely clueless!

No, but really, this is getting pathetic. Every rep is now making up his own story... I've never seen such poor judgment on a release of a MAJOR product, especially when its one of their "flagship models" (for the Alienware brand, anyway)

Starting to reaaaaally lose hope in this.. I wish they'd just tell us whats going on. The best OFFICIAL statement we've gotten is some rep saying "Expect news soon!" in comments on Dell's website.

Not to put a dampner on things, i know you guys are anxious etc but EVERY company does the same...take Intel for example. New SSD's?...hmmm ... wheres the news on them? ...i guess its like "leaking" the good stuff before its hit, think about it....sales will go through the roof with the relieved anticipation when it finally gets announced...thats what large companies marketing departments are for...maximise profits.

Do you really think they are gonna announce anything before its ready for launch? - they will save it till the bitter end to squeeze every last drop of expectancy out of people. Once things get annoucned, people pounce like they were starved ethiopians.....

My advice, relax....a watched kettle never boils.....

    Holy cow.

I sent my R2 to the repair depot a month ago and supposedly they were waiting for a part to come in. I called today after 3 straight business days of calling and was supposed to get a tracking number. Turns out they are replacing the machine completely! 2 week turnaround time and supposedly it's going to be a refurb but now I'm all confused. Do they have enough of the R2s sitting around to get me what I paid for less than a year ago? I know it'll be upgraded parts but still ... wow.

I popped on to the Dell/AW site to speculate on what my new machine might have and now this!?
