Hey all,
Just upgraded the 580m to a 680m my m17xr3-3d and wanted to share what i found,
First the instructions from eurocom were not the best when i came to application of the thermal pads, there are 2 different thicknesses but no indication on what goes where, in the end i put the thickest onto the vrm's at the top of the card, it also gave no info about the ram on the back so i just reused the existing thermal pads.
Also the 580m heat sync is not the best of fit, it is stepped for the 580, (when you fit it you will see), in the end i just padded the thermal pads to ensure contact with it reusing where necessary. But all in all was a quick and easy job after some test fitting.
The software downloaded works great just follow the instructions and your good to go, i also flashed the unlocked a12 bios though disabling the onboard graphics is not need with the 3d as this is done.
After lots of stress testing the temps are great maxing a 64c when looping heaven bench.
I have also flashed a modded bios from over tech inferno which has given a clock boost with no increase in voltage.

I'm glad you got it working without issues and no signs of cooling problems either
+1 Rep for the effort.

Hi, brave758,
Good to hear you got it working without problems, however isn't the point of flashing unlocked bios (beside the extra functions) is to disable the integrated graphics, but in your post you said it was already disabled on 3d enabled m17x? So does this mean you don't have to use unlocked bios on 3d enabled alienwares to install the newer gen graphics card?
Cheers, -
Glad it worked out well. I had a similar experience upgrading my 6970M to a 4GB 680M from Eurocom. I did exactly what you did and just used thermal pads of the correct thickness to ensure contact with the heatsink, and all is fine. My temps max at 66 degrees celsius when overclocked to 915MHz main clock and 2250MHz memory using nVidiaInspector and slv7's modded vBios (with voltage increase) for 4GB Clevo cards from Tech Inferno.
@r3pul5iv3: The A12 unlocked BIOS with SATA fix works perfectly, there's no reason not to be running it really. -
Thanks guys, sjgore said the unlocked bios allows 6gig sata, also as there was no strait answer i want to be extra sure. I am also running the MSI OC bios as this give you 770 core off the bat but i have also clocked it the the same setting and am getting the same temps never goes above this. I have also checked the HDMI in and out and both work fine, just need to mod the reg to get the sound for the HDMI working all in all on very happy customer
