Since I am considering this for college, I need to know how reliable this thing is going to be. I don't plan on overclocking it or dropping it or putting high pressure on it. I just want it to do its applications properly. I have NEVER had a laptop, regardless of brand, go out on me because I tend to think that I treat them well. So my question is, if I don't abuse this laptop, it should break right?

Any electronic device has a chance of breaking, especially a laptop. I would recommend a 3 or 4 year warranty with accidential insurance if you want to avoid costly bills during the useful life of the laptop. I don't recommend extended warranties for desktops since the components are typically replaceable.

However, since your usage is primarily for college, I think there are better options. i.e. Asus EP121, Lenovo X220 tablet, etc. I think being able to take handwritten notes throughout college is going to benefit you considerably. A $1099 EP121 + a $1000 desktop for gaming is still going to be cheaper than a $2000+ alienware laptop.

FYI: If you do decide on a gaming laptop, definitely go with Alienware. HP Envys are plagued with throttling. The M17xR3 has great cooling and the 240W power supply ensures that it is capable of running at full speed without any throttling.

Its a machine. Machines break sometimes. Alot of the posts on here are of people who have problems with there's but there are ten times as many out there who don't have any issues. So ur question is how good is your luck aha. Its a great laptop made by a great company. While dell does have issues in their customer support, it doesn't make it all bad.

I say go for it, if you have the money and it wont break you and if your a gamer. This laptop can be used for pretty much anything else but its main purpose is gaming.

But yes, treat it good, keep the anti virus up to date and you will be fine.
