    hi all
    noobie here

but what exactly will the modded bios help with?

I have a 580m so will that help in throtting issues?
Have not really experienced it yet as i haven not really spent alot of time on games on the laptop.. but i read so much in here about throtting that if i could prevent it first it would be good

    Hi edm11,

this bios on its own won't prevent throttling. There are many other things that you have to do to minimize it. The unlocked A08 bios is the stock dell bios but with all options available. The one that comes with the laptop is very locked down with limited options. The unlocked version, you can for example, disable the intel integrated graphics which will help with what i call optimus hell. You can enable more overclocking options etc...

For throttling, First download the Dell vbios which helps. There are also other options and tricks. The members here with 580's are well versed and can help you with their *secret* techniques lol. For example this thread offers a solution to minimize the throttling:

    Official Dell 580m Vbios:
    (Stolen from the Stickied thread)

    Release Date: 10/5/2011
    Version: 70.24.2B.00.06, A01
    Download Type: BIOS

Dell highly recommends applying this update as soon as possible. The update contains changes to improve the reliability and availability of your Dell system.
The flash utility will ask for user input to override PCI Subsystem ID. This is normal. Press y whenever prompted to complete the Vbios flash.
    Updates Vbios on GTX580M cards.

    Instructions:
ISO image of production GTX580M Vbios. Burn image to CD and reboot system. Press F12 to choose CD/DVD drive. When prompted, press Y.

yup...download the file. WIthin the rar achive, there will be an setup or install exe...execute from within windows. This is one of the easiest bios updates you'll ever do.

To switch off integrated graphics...look for iGFX or something similar and disable it in the bios. Enjoy :D

to switch off optimus, just go under video settings, and then integrated GPU, or (something along those lines) and turn the toggle to off. Then you should be good. :) To install the bios, just download and install and let it do its thing, don't touch anything or you may mess it up. Hope this helps :)

Edit: You beat me this time :p

    on bootup, hit F2.

It is fine to disable the integrated graphics...worse case, if you mess something up, you can reset the bios to stock settings by removing the cmos battery

assuming you have nvidia card, the optimus doesn't always work right. Its suppose to be smart enough to switch between intel vs nvidia depending on the app...but sometimes you get intel integrated graphics while you are gaming. So this is the issue

just gotta remember all the settings you tweaked before you try to change it again :p I swap between turning the IGP on off depending on whats going on, and I forgot to swap what was running the main display, had to reseat the card and do a bios reset ;) moral of the story is remember what you toggled.

it's noticeable, but you can always turn the 460m off and turn the IGPU back on to maximize battery even more than optimus does ;)
