does this happen to you ?
I went over all the devices to see if they could wake the computer from sleep but couldn't find any...
Did anybody encounter this behavior ?
It sux because i close the lid and it wakes up and the screen gets hot (among other things..)

    EDIT:
    SOLVED
In my case the problem was that the mouse would wake up the computer probably from small vibrations to the table or the floor on which it sits.
Since it's a razer mamba, and it's very sensitive i assume it didn't help :)
So, to people with mamba, the solution is :
go to "devices and printers", choose "razer mamba charging dock", doubleclick, go to hardware tab, press properties, power management tab, uncheck allow this device to wake up the computer.
Please note that another solution would be to disable "USB Power share" in BIOS. This option keeps the usb ports powered up even if the computer is off/sleeping/hibernating thus allowing various devices to charge during that time. I did not want to disable that function, since i do want my mamba and occasionally my iphone to charge when the computer is sleeping.

If this does not solve your problem here's couple of things you could try :

    1. Power Settings -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings -> “Multimedia settings” option -> “When sharing media.” ->”Allow the computer to sleep.
    2. From elevated command prompt :
2.1 POWERCFG -DEVICEQUERY wake_armed - will display all devices currently able to bring the computer out of sleep.
2.2 powercfg -lastwake - shows the device that brought the comp out of sleep last time.

When I had the factory install image on my system it did this. Most times it was windows updates (set to do it at specific times each day) and other updaters running in the background that would wake it.

When I installed win 7 from scratch, I never had it happen to me again..

Yea that too.. but seriously I think mine was from the settings on the updater.. I didnt change anything in the bios and after reinstalling, it never happened again.. I know it was windows updates at times, cuz i was home when it did it and noticed that it was doing stuff in the background and it rebooted itself.

It may not just be windows updates.. It could be other programs... Check the wake on lan... double check any antivirus or other programs that may check for updates (dell included) and make sure that any wake option is turned off I am not saying disable the updates all together.. that would be bad.. I just knew that winupdate was doing it on mine since it happened while i was sitting there. The first few times, I had no clue...

Maybe set it to just notify you but dont download them or install... Thats what I have mine set to.. Just notify that some are avail and I choose what to do from there on. I am picky and dont want them to start downloading while paying video games... lol

So there is no wake up on LAN in bios. I also disabled the updates for windows. Closed the lid now and going to rest. I will let you know a little later if it woke up or not. I hate when those voodoo things start to happen.

There is no wake-up LAN funtion? Okay I still have the manual (lost the M17x :( ) And indeed couldn't find it.. But there is a USB wake support.... Did you have any USB device's attached? Like a wireless mouse etc.

Ok, so there's an option in Bios called USB Power share, which allows devices connected to consume power from USB even when the laptop is off/sleep mode.
I suspect this is the problem, i will try to cancel it and see if the problem goes away.

Some more things i did : (which may or may not have already solved the problem)
    1. Remove the checkbox from "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" (i know it's the opposite, but who knows..) on my 6300 wifi card.
    2. Power Settings -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings -> “Multimedia settings” option -> “When sharing media.” ->”Allow the computer to sleep.

Some commands that you can run in case it happens to you too :
    in command prompt :

POWERCFG -DEVICEQUERY wake_armed - will display all devices currently able to bring the computer out of sleep.

powercfg -lastwake - shows who brought the comp out of sleep last time.

Too bad i discovered all that after it happened.

Now i am waiting for the next time it happens to investigate.

I was going to post a flipant remark about how your laptop is haunted and you need to get an old priest and a young priest, but that USB power share sounds like a nice feature for when I have my usb HD attached and want to sleep the laptop (assuming that's not what is causing the problems). I didn't know about that (only that the eSATA port can also do that). I'll have to give it a try when my new M17x comes in. Though if it only controls the eSATA/USB port then it shouldn't be causing issues since I used that and Sleep on my M17x withou any issues.

ok, my current guess is that it has nothing to do with BIOS. I think that it was the mamba all along. i saw that if i move the mouse it would wake the computer up and even though i was not moving it, i think that minimal table vibrations or whatever would trigger a mouse movement and that in turn would wake up the comp..
All i did was go to "devices and printers", choose "razer mamba charging dock", doubleclick, go to hardware tab, press properties, power management tab, uncheck allow this device to wake up the computer.

I will see if it really helped in a day or so.. want to test it good.

Hmmm... The jury still out, as I have no external devices (wired or wirelessly) to mine... Mine has actually been about a six hour delay from sleep to auto-wake.

ProMind, did you see the commands i posted before to analyze this issue ?
one to see who last woke up the lappy, the other showing all the devices capable of waking it up.

I don't know much about that mouse but as it's a gaming mouse, perhaps the DPI is cranked up high enough that a slight mouse movement (like vibrating floor or wall causing a virbation in the desk) is causing the pointer to move, thus causing the laptop to wake up. Perhaps, as this is a gaming mouse, turning down the DPI would help (assuming such a thing can be done).

    ^^^^ Bingo

I had this issue all the time and couldnt figure it out. Then i noticed that a usb is powered even when the laptop is off or asleep. This powered USB also has my wireless mouse connected so when a door slammed or something similar it would wake up my laptop.

It doesnt bother me as much as it will end up going back to sleep after a while but it did creep me out the first few times.

Sorted, doesn't seem to be any kind of bug.

@Kavy or Mfractal, if you disable the USB powersharing does it solve the from USB Mouse wake up issue? Because I think it still is strange if the USB Wake Support is set to "off" in the BIOS it still can be overruled by software?

If the answer is "yes" then what's use of even having this USB Wake Support in the BIOS anyways...? And TBH this doesn't save energy then if it wakes up at the slightest movement...

I actually just disabled the mouse ability to wake the computer. I like that the USB is powered on so the mouse can still charge. But I am sure that would have solved the problem as well.

mfractal, maybe your M17x was waking up from sleep because it was no longer tired or you had an alarm clock set ;) Or maybe it just needed the bathroom...
