    Hello

So I was browsing the internet on the battery while cooking food .
All of a sudden the screen turns all pixelated and slowly fades to black.

I have to holds down power button to reset, turn on and windows screen comes up, then black screen like when alienware splash screen should appear.
The computer freezes at that point, the computer will only boot in safe mode.
I tried to repair windows, restore windows, all fail

I then reformat hard drive and reinstall windows, installed fine and loaded up. I pull up device managed and both gpus detected, the internal and my 6990
Install both graphics drivers and reboot computer and same problem happens again.

Any ideas at all?, just had my gpu replaced two Weeks ago and more this again, epic fail.

Does this only happen when your laptop is on battery? When it fades to black is the computer still on? Also If you have done all of that and not solved the problem it is most likely a hardware problem again.

Yeah that is what I was thinking

I got bored and messed with the computer in safe mode.

If I uninstall all the drivers for the IGPU, the computer will boot and look up this crap resolution. It will reinstall the drivers after reboot and I have to uninstall again otherwise it will lock up.

I tried installing the 6990 again once it booted and says it installed fine, but when I open device manager, there is a little warning next to it. I try to click on "update driver" and it turns into default VGA adapter... So yeah maybe the iGPU and 6990m are dead? Wierd how it will boot if the igpu is gone

I just want this thing to run properly...

No there is no chance of igp diyin, dont worry its just the 6990m,
when you boot with 6990m do you see any artifacts on the screen?

I don't think 6990 is being used at all. Nothing on the screen, no switchable graphics, even though I uninstall the gpu graphics, it seems that is what is still used by computer when it runs.

Boots in super low res, it is just shown as standard VGA in device manager if I click on it.

I update the driver and it won't take effect. Same thing over and over.

Try CCleaner and wipe out all instances of ATI and reinstall 12.2 Catalyst.

Hook it up to an external monitor just to rule out any issues with the screen. The external monitor uses the 6990m if I remember right. I know on my M11xR2 that its external output is 335m exclusively so makes sense that this would be the same.

If it does not show at all on an external, and what I said above is true (looking for SlickDude, Yoda, or widezu to chime in here for verification) then the 6990m is dead.

Have you tried installing different drivers? That might be part of the problem, but if you have had problems in the past it could also a hardware issue. Mobo or GPU :(

I tried to hook up to monitor, doesn't even recognize that I plug in the HDMI cable, probbaly because the drivers will not stick with the 6990. They don't install correctly and I tried CC cleaner and drive sweeper... no effect

Yes my GPU died before. I tried to tell the Dell service rep that mobo should be replaced with the GPU (just wanted more new parts to prevent future failure) and was denied. Maybe I will get new one this time?

Thank you for the offer but I am still under warranty through Dell :)

Update.... Just removed my 6990 from the machine after reinstalling the iGPU driver, computer rebooted perfectly and in 1080p finally. Now to get the Dell tech out here again and hopefully to replace the mobo too.
HDMI out works now and everything is fine, just cant play any games and my harddrive is completely empty since I tried to reinstall windows grrrrr

Dell is wanting me to send in my laptop for motherboard and gpu replacement.

Hopefully the turn around time is quick and everything gets fixed properly.

Last tech came out and got thermal paste all over my laptop and broke tabs offs my back cover trying to force it straight down instead of sliding it on.

I also work 7-430 and these techs only come out during those hours.

You say demand then to come out as if it is bad to send my laptop in.... Is service our repair typically poor or slow?

    Thanks

You can say that they are a bit slow. So, if you are willing to still send your machine in, remember to call them every day atleast 1 time and check the status on the system... They cannot do anything to your system and even if they do and they bring it back to you, they will still have to fix it; warranty, remember?! :)

When my M18x went to the depot for repairs I had it back in 5 calendar days. I would not call that slow service.

Dell shipped me a box Monday
I received and shipped back Tuesday
    Computer repaired Thursday and shipped
    Received Friday

Pretty quick service, only replaced my GPU and not my motherboard. Dell did a fresh windows install which had no Alienware splash screen, backgrounds, or a functioning optimus.

So I did fresh install and everything is up and running. Hopefully this GPU lasts
