A quick search did not turn up any feedback about overclocking on GTX 900m series. This will need testing.

Confirmed as working on 980m for overclocking. Getting a few FPS increase in games testing
.
-
Just need a moddified inf now for 980m.
-
Wait for tomorrow... J95 will have it ready on techinferno!

Seeing a lot of 'driver stopped responding' with this release but so far not at stock clocks, so less stable than 344.75 I was using for me.
Very small increases across all my in-game benches - wiped out by having stock clock

Huh great that you told me. I will stay on 344.75.

Scores are lower, more crashes when OC. Not for me either, going back to the previous OC driver.
-
Without oc on aw 17 r1, its working perfeclty without crash but i launch bf4 only 2 times and 3dmark11 is a bit better result. I try a little oc( 100hzcore and 60mem) and i got 11060k with less than 66degre in 3dmark11. Till now im happy..but i will test it more in weekend

This is all stock, no overclock at all, just flashed vbios with the previous OC driver. I will try the new driver again, but so far the older driver seems to be more stable and GPU performs slightly better.
3d Mark 11 new score with stock clocks, 347.52 unlocked driver (modded by J95 @Techinferno):

So without Oc, the 980m with 347.88 is very stable for me in stock vbios, even with lots of windows return, gameplay, movies swiching... Max cpu temp is 73°c anf GPU temp is 70°C with a full night gaming.
I didnt notice if there is more/less fps while gaming.
link of my gameplay with bf hardline this night:

Making me so jelly with that 980M. The replacement system I got came with an 880M and the throttling and heat suck with this card.

Repaste the GPU... After repasting mine the maximum temp. I saw on the 880m was 79c after 12 hours of DA-Inquisition which have that oven effect on GPUs... On 3Dmark11 and normal games I have never seen it past 70c and I never throttle on both scenarios boost clocks all the time with stock vBios -
I have repasted it with IC Diamond, before my temps we're getting up to 83-84C and now on most games it doesn't go over 79 C and sometimes gets to 80 C when playing Crysis 3 or GPU demanding games. But the temps are still relatively higher than yours

In my fans' tables I set both my max GPU & CPU fans speed to kick in at 60c and that helps insanely
I can't see ur rig as im using my phone and can't see ur sig but if u can control ur fans try to opt for a conservative profile. -
The only other thing you can do is flash the unlocked vBIOS as I said in the PM.. I can send it to you but are you willing to do it?
@GodlikeRU, the unlocked vBIOS you downloaded of techinferno didn't work for you right? Was it because it was a UEFI version? It should work fine in his AW17 R1 right?Last edited: Mar 24, 2015Klk450 likes this. -
Well, these drivers are not that bad after all:

Alienware R4 with GTX 980m does benefit from the 330W PSU. You can maintain higher clocks without throttling, which results in overall better performance of the card.Last edited: Mar 25, 2015Hackintoshihope likes this. -

You sure are wringing some good performance, I get problems with any OC on my 980m's with this driver
.
-
I had to buy 330W PSU to be able to reach this. When using 240W PSU, card throttles and highest I was able to get was about 9400.

Still can't get past 10k points yet, but getting there

Yes i am. There's a noticeable throttle issue i notice in some games.
-
Where did u you get your 330W PSU? Mind sharing the link?
Will send, later today.. it's 1.30a.m here now.. Off to bed
-
Have you checked how much watts your laptop use during benchmark test with a kill-a-watt?

What kind of voltage are you running? -

I do not own a watt meter. The main issue with a 240W PSU is when I run the GPU with higher clocks, nvidia driver crashes. This means I need to raise the voltage, which cures the crashing however voltage above 1.37 or so introduces throttling. Temps never reach go above 75 or so, which confirms it has nothing to do with a thermal protection kicking in. The throttling with higher voltage shows that the 240W PSU does not provide enough juice for GTX 980m in R4. I have confirmed this now that I own a 330W PSU - the card no longer throttles at exactly the same voltage and clocks settings.
I tried loads of different settings and can't remember what voltage was working the best. I will check it for you when I come back from work. -
Well, something went terribly wrong with the drivers and GPU started throttling again :/ I had to wipe all the drivers clean again with DDU and reinstall Intel and nvidia drivers. This is the first run - all the overclocking settings are visible now including the voltage. I did not check all the temps, but on the combined (the last) test highest temp was 68 degrees Celsius.
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6380027
second run - all the settings are the same +5 on the base clock:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6380550
This time I also logged the temps and the highest was 69 degrees (with 22 ambient).
10k FINALLY

That's some sweet numbers you got there! 4ghz from the CPU and +450 on mem! I can't go over 250 without it crashing
but I haven't flashed the cards yet so power target is not available
...
You must have be going crazy trying to crack five digits, haha.
Nice work!mariussx likes this. -
Thank you
330W PSU is probably the last upgrade for my R4 and it played a major role helping to reach those 5 digits. Flashing the GPU was one of the first things I did

This driver sucks, see this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/344-75-still-the-best.773658/
-
Sadly i'm still experiencing some throttling with my GTX 880M, for some reason If I don't have vsync on my games the card doesn't boost to 993 MHz and the voltage stays at 0.981V. When I do have Vsync on the card does boost to 993 and the voltage increases to 1.006 V as well. My temps do stay below 75 C with Vsync on but without I've seen it get up to 82 C in games like Crysis 3 and some lag spikes do occur.
-
Those are some sweet numbers! What voltage are you running with the 330w psu?
