I recommend ringing tech support and getting them to talk you through it

    Hi Sammymuir

Do you have the M17x R1 or the M17x R2? If your system was ordered NEW it would be an R2 in the UK (MLK=R2).

If you have the R2 than your computer was factory installed with a partition on Drive C: Whether that partition is intact depends on whether the Windows 7 Installation deleted this partition or not. You use software called Dell Datasafe to resinstall the factory settings on the R2. Alienspawn on the R1. This should be covered in your owners manual.

Follow Adrianrp's advice and call tech support and see if they can walk you through the process as there are multiple restore options. If you can't reinstall the factory image than I would simply tell Dell you want to return the unit no questions asked and reorder. If you have to resintall everything it is not worth the headcache. If you have lost the factory image than you have lost a major feature and that is why I would return. Sometimes a manual install works smoothly sometimes not.

I remember years ago some HP or Compaq computer having to run from disk for the first time to install the operating system. Dell should provide a piece of paper on the keyboard to tell people the OS and drivers are installed. Many people make this mistake.
