Depending on your preferences there are quite a few upgrades you can do. First thing I'd recommend is going to 8GB of ram (although you can go to 16 as well)

From a video card perspective you can go with a dual AMD 6970-6990 or a single 7970 configuration (or the Nvidia equivalent). The GPU upgrade will provide the best bang for your buck and memory is cheap these days. Other things to consider would be an SSD drive. My setup can handle all the new games at very high settings and incredible frame rates and it should be able to play games at reasonable settings for some time to come

9400M GT + Core 2 Extreme = M17x R1. Max RAM is 8 GB DDR3 and best drop in upgrade for the R1 is 5870M Crossfire.

I think you'll see better performance upgrading your GPUs (5870's) and memory first. As far as the CPU goes I'm not all that familiar with the R1 options so maybe some can comment on that piece.

I also own the R1, it is retired from gaming these days and is only used for everyday tasks but it still can play games at decent settings, go with GPU upgrade and get the QX9300, you should not pay more than $200 for the CPU and you can get dual GPUs for around $350 for both. View my sig for my r1 specs.

I second this, you should do the video card and RAM 1st.

kinda off topic, is it better to have 2 sticks of 4gb ram or 1 stick 8gb ram?

It's pretty much the same but 2x4 is our recommendation for that. we normally ask to have the RAM slots filled out the same way.
