    I would get the 920XM.

The i7 are newer processors and are just much much faster than any Core 2 Duo.

With the 920XM laptop, not only does it have an extreme edition processor but it has 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and 5870s in XFire. This thing will definitely last a long time. Otherwise your second best bet it is the 820QM.

Oldest unit, Less powerfull CPU and Display cards than the others.

Newer. Lower end ‘refreshed’ first gen i7. Looks like only one display card.

    Alienware M17x-R2 Laptop ATI 5870 CrossfireX i7 920XM | eBay
Most powerful one here. High end first gen i7, pre-refresh. Dual GPU.
    Good machine for overclocking.

    Alienware M17x R2 Laptop i7-820QM,6GB,2xHD 5870,Blu,RED | eBay
Not far behind above machine (if all stock clocked).
Mid range first gen i7, pre-refresh. Dual GPU and more memory.
CPU runs cooler, less fan noise with demanding games.
Less overclocking options than above machine.

With all/any of these machine, make sure you have the 1920x1200 RBG screen.
If you plan to run modern games, pick one of the lower two.
If you’ve nothing demanding lined up, they’re all good kit. Buy what you can afford.

The i7 was 720/820/920 then was refreshed to 740/840/940. May help you to gauge the age of the machine. LINK
