    Hi,

I just installed the 7970m and everything went perfect I thought. I turned it on, went into bios and it was not recognized "Not detected". Strange thing is 5 minutes before that it was recognizing the 7970m just fine!

    Suggestions?

Did you flash it with the vBIOS on TechInferno?

Yeah, check the post above. You'll need to register and make five posts to become a member, I think. Or donate.

    Thanks I will try it.

Also I used 1mm pads (should be ok right?)
The card went undetected after I had installed the Igpu drivers (coincidence?)

Um, I don't know about that, but there are two size pads: 1mm and 1.5mm. At least that's what I remember reading. Hopefully someone with experience in this area can help you with that.

I rather not have the card overvolted/undervolted or overclocked so I guess you mean the 7970m.ROM that isn't in a folder because it's really unclear if that is the unmodded bios.

Well I expected this. When I try to flash it does not detect any display adapters to flash :/ this means I cant actually follow the tutorial
    [GUIDE] AMD VBIOS flashing

Did you try re-seating the card? Maybe the pads you bought were the wrong size? I have no idea. And are you sure the card is new? It could be DOA.

I reseated it 6 times already. Also I used the old pads which i still had luckily. I also tried resetting bios multiple times and I cleaned the MXM slot.

<s>Also I had already sent a rather mad pm to upgrademonkey prior to doing anything with the card because there are scratches on the gpu die while it was supposed to be new. I actually said in there my 6990m looks newer. But I didnt think much of it untill now.</s>

Ofcourse my ISP decided it's time for maintanance right now so I have to type on my phone lol. I will upload the pictures I made of the gpu die when internet comes on. I can't believe my card might be DOA -_- sometimes I really hate loving my hobby

    Edit: Which is NOW

Hi really.sorry to hear about that, the Card was sent as NEW, however as company policy, we need to test every single card/CPU before dispatch, as our customers spread all over the world. we can not risk sending a DOA card. The shipping cost is significant. as stated The cards has been tested perfectly working in our R4, so we suspect it could be vbios compatibility. the 022 is known to have issues with R3 , 1762 , and perfectly on R4. please let us know , we will proceed on emails Kind Regards Lee

The card would be recognized by the system if it wasn't dead, correct? It's not being recognized. Therefore, he cannot install a proper vBIOS.

Can your PSU support this card? I've heard of issues with the card not being detected if the power supply is not sufficient.

And lastly, did you disable iGPU?

If I disable iGPU I just get 8beeps and no screen. Post failure I guess?
Also I lost my original PSU while travalling so I bought a genuine part number: J938H dell AC adapter back
this one: Genuine Dell Alienware Laptop AC Adapter Charger Alienware M17x R1 R2 R3 PA 9E | eBay

edit: The adapter that I bought through the above reseller has dell P/N: FWCRC not the problematic J938H

On the back of the card it says 021 so that should not be the problem. Also it does not Post/detect at all so I dont think it is the vBIOS

    HOLY :O How?

    IMG-20140108-WA0001.jpg

It was 4:15 AM last night when I gave up. I let the Laptop sit there without a Battery or PSU attached. Today I did this:

Put battery in there --> did NOT connect the PSU --> turned it on on battery --> ati GFX shows up :O!

What to do now oO I am so scared of losing the detection again. I turned it on 3 times all 3 it detected it.

Since I did like 4 reseats with the old pads, just in case, there are now old pads on that card. Problem is that the pads for Vram are teared all over because they stuck to the heatsink first time I took it off. I need to replace them + proper cooling paste because I reused the same paste for like 7 reseats which means it is now probably full of air bubbles... I fear losing detection if I repaste and put new pads on.

I'm not going to try anything before I get some suggestions on how to proceed.

edit: Aaaand it's gone again "[NOT DETECTED]" (didnt do anything just turned it on to check if it was still detected)

<s>And how does one get such scratches on there? I repasted my 6990M 2 times and there are 0 scratches on it. If it was new do you clean the die with grinding paper after testing? The guy who had to test the card was obviously careless with it.</s>

edit (02-02-2014): Upgrademonkey took my card back and send me a new one free and with 2 way shipping paid. see last post in this thread

According to the link he provided, the person he bought it from on eBay was selling Genuine 240W PSU's from Dell. But he may have sent the wrong one, which would explain all of the issues.

240Watt PSU with dell P/N: FWCRC. I called alienware and it turns out they sell this exact one with the same Partnumber/PN. It looks like it is a genuine PSU.

Yes I think so too. I put my old baked 6990M in there and it registered right away and has no problems whatsoever.
Thanks a lot for your help though +rep for you!

some GOOD news though. When I called dell for the PSU and I explained the whole situation they agreed to replace my baked half dead 6990M with a new 6990M for FREE :D and I don't even have warranty left on this machine. Big shout out to DELL!

1: I return the DOA 7970M, ask for another one and sell the new 6990M but not enough for a new 2960XM.
2: I return the DOA 7970M, ask for a refund and keep the new 6990M but I have enough money for a 2960XM

I want to clear Upgrademonkey's name. They took my faulty card paid for shipping both ways and gave me a new card. By ebay rules they wouldnt have to pay for both way shipping so that was really nice. It runs perfectly now after some troubleshooting

Also I want to make clear that I say this because they handled it well. They didn't mention that I had to fix this thread as a term/condition before sending.
