This version of AW17 R2 is totally gimped, 2x RAM slots and the worst part is 180W PSU only mentioned while the older R1 had 240W also though 330W can also be used if on High Overclock/ Overvolt. Moreover there's a high proability that this machine would feature a BGA mounted CPU and GPU (the VRAM of 900M series that's mentioned is low and the MXM version that are shipping currently have more VRAM ) aswell so no upgrades and high repair costs if that happens.

Once the R2 gets released compare them and grab one which fits best for your type.

Wow, I'm kinda shocked. First that it gets leaked like that, and then the specs seem so 'meh' I was hoping for the graphics amplifier however that's more of a preference to have a proper dock for my workstation then the graphics power I will get out of it.

Two ram slots though? That's not good.
    Sub-woofer - Good news.
4 USB ports - Seriously need more then that!
Touch-screen - I feel is kinda pointless on a machine like that, would prefer a high resolution than 1080P. Also looks like 3D is now gone.
Battery seems smaller? Think that says 82WHR where as we have 86whr.

Did you get any pics about the CPU?

    Worrying...

I see the x-fi mb3 software is now included with the new aw17s... I wonder if that means there will be a driver for us aw17r1 users that matches better than the current generic mb3 software from creative.

Yeah the 3D is dead now, but the share goes to Nvidia too fro dropping 3D Vision on the 900M series (The website details like that though the Ext. Monitor 3D capability can run it), but the 120Hz fluidity seems no more on the AW17, About th CPU accordiong to the leaked 3D Mark points to HQ processors but cannot say how much genuine is that 3DMark bench.

Our Alienware 17 R1 has a Realtek Soundcard, the Creative SoundBlaster was up till the M17xR4 & M18xR2. These Dell guys are really worst when it comes to the newer refreshes...they screwed up the Anodized AL chassis and the touchpanel and gimped the BIOS too :nah:
I think the R1 Ranger is the last 17" one that will enjoy the upgradability and flexibility And the M18x R2 will be the real beast and best machines ever produced by AW as they might be killing off the Aw18 Viking...

Yeah, I know the m17xr4, m18xr2, and m14xr2 had the soundblaster chips in them, but they had alot of issues (I had a m17xr4 and still have a m14xr2)
But, the x-fi mb3 is just a software interface that works with any audio chip to give you x-fi audio options. I have it on my aw17r1 right now and it works well.
Im just thinking that since now they actually include it with the new 17, that maybe there is a extra level of customization in the software to work good with the aw17 audio chips.
The new 17 should still be running the realtek sound chips, just with the mb3 overlay on it.

Oh, I didn't knew about that software....and yeah they seem to be broken on many mobos..& If the soundcard is same Realtek ALC668 then I guess it would work. Time will clear things out

I have it installed on my aw17, I like the software as it gives me alot of options, I still dont know how to use it right though :) There is no manual, or instructions for this software.

I originally got it to replace the stock dolby studio stuff.

Glad I waited after all. seems like the new ones are not so far from release after all.
I hope the alienware 14 gets a similar update too though.
For the rest, I hope that that is an IPS panel that they are talking about. If so I might get this one in case the alienware 14 won't be released.

I'm worried too for thin dimensions. There are lot of possibilities it's soldered CPU/GPU. I don't like it.

and i heard some rumor about the new aw15, but according to the leaked specs of new aw17, i really doubt about such possibility, because aw13 will be upgraded to new 960m/965m, then there is no space between aw13 and new aw17(970m/980m) as per graphics peeformance ranks. unless aw17 will use sli in the future....

The CPU info might not be there because their contract with intel/amd is not completed yet, or perhaps a new CPU release is due. Not sure. Or just an unfinished webpage perhaps.
About the GPU being soldered is not a huge issue for me since the 980 is quite strong anyway, but there is support for the GA so not a huge issue.

But the CPU might be an issue, especially if they only offer the currently available CPU's.

And there we go, its possible, I think if alienware went with soldered gpus, they should do this.
THe only thing that keeps me from the x7 now is the horrid storage options... yea, triple msatas is sweet, but I dont have the cash to buy three 1tb msata drives just to keep the storage I need.
My 17 can hold 4tb of hdd, and 1tb msata, or if I was made of money, I can get msata raid boxes (holds 2 msata drives in a 2.5inch hdd case) I could put 7tb or ssd in it... the x7 would max out at 5tb

And these days i also heard some rumor from the staff of alienware shop in China, about the new AW15, the best situation can be: both the new 17 and 15 are landing to the earth, and at least the new slim new 17 is coming!
